I’m getting an Assertion error in Pro Tools. How do I fix it?
There are many different kinds of Assertion errors in Pro Tools, and there are a few different potential solutions to consider. To get your system functioning properly again, try the following common solutions:
- In Pro Tools 9 and up, try changing your Playback Engine. This can be done from the Setup menu > Playback Engine.
Note: If the Assertion error is preventing Pro Tools from opening, try holding the N key on your keyboard while Pro Tools boots up. This will force the Playback Engine dialogue to open before Pro Tools initializes the engine.
- Trash your Pro Tools preferences which will essentially reset Pro Tools. In many cases, this will fix your Assertion error. To learn how to trash the preferences, see this article.
- Try creating a new session. If the Assertion error disappears, your last session was likely corrupted. Simply import the tracks for your old session into the new one and you should be good to go.
