What accessories does a violinist need?

Violin accessories fall into two categories: consumables and durables. Consumables are the essentials you’ll replace routinely, such as violin strings, rosin, cleaning cloths, and humidity control products. Durables are longer-lasting accessories that improve your quality of life, such as a case, clip-on tuner, chinrest, shoulder rest, bow, and performance chair.

What do the different violin sizes mean?

Violin size refers to the body length of the instrument (excluding neck and scroll), expressed as a fraction of a full-size 4/4 violin. Students typically start on smaller sizes (1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, or 7/8) before graduating to full size. That said, smaller sizes aren’t just for students. Renowned Dutch violinist Berent Korfker has played a 347mm (7/8) 1702 Stradivari since 1998. It all comes down to what feels right in your hands. How do I stop my violin from squeaking?

Violin squeak is common, but it’s avoidable with practice. Try these tips from our violin experts:

  • Keep your bow perpendicular to the strings
  • Apply even bowing pressure: more at the tip, less at the frog
  • Maintain a steady bowing speed
  • Aim for smooth bow-direction changes
  • Keep your bow and bow hair in good condition
  • Use the right amount of rosin: not too much, not too little
