The Importance of Pop Filters
If you've ever had a perfect take or podcast anecdote ruined by a plosive "p" hitting the mic capsule like a ton of bricks, then you already know the value of a pop filter. This clever device places a meshlike material between a sound source and microphone to tame those pesky plosives without sapping your natural tone.
Are you searching for the perfect pop filter to preserve those once-in-a-lifetime performances and interviews? You've come to the right place. Sweetwater carries a vast selection of top-quality pop filters from the manufacturers you trust. Pop filters are also available as bundle options with other related items for the studio, such as mic stands, cables, sound isolation dampeners, and even microphones and preamps.
What Is a Pop Filter?
At its core, a pop filter is a relatively simple device. It's a mesh membrane stretched taut across a frame that allows sound waves to pass through while blocking sudden rushes of air. These bursts of breath are called plosives, and you can easily create one by saying the word "plosive" into a microphone. Do you hear that aggressive puff of air? That's a plosive, and, once captured, it's virtually impossible to edit out. You get plosives from hard, breathy consonants like "p" and "b," as well as the occasional "t," "d," and "k" sounds. Needless to say, plosives are annoying at best and, at worst, can ruin a great vocal take.
How Do Pop Filters Differ?
Although it may seem that all pop filters do pretty much the same thing, there are quite a few design variations that you should consider. Of course, you can go with the standard nylon stretched over a round hoop and call it a day. There are plenty of versions with that design. Some pop filters use two parallel screens, one on the front and one on the back of the hoop. Many use the old-school mesh version with no complaints. However, some folks feel that the mesh slightly damps the higher frequencies. To address this concern, some pop filters are constructed of metal mesh or specially designed fabric. Another variation incorporates a mesh screen on one hoop and a slotted metal screen on a separate hoop that can fit together or be separated for individual use.
How Does a Pop Filter Attach to a Mic Stand?
Another detail to consider is the method of attaching the pop filter to the mic stand and adjusting its placement in front of the mic. You have your choice of various clamping mechanisms. While these are by far the most common, some magnetically attach to your microphone's shockmount, or you can choose one that mounts directly onto the microphone itself.
