Electronic Drum Troubleshooting Guide
In this guide, we will show you how to test an electronic drum set to make sure it’s working correctly. That means checking the cables, pads, module settings, and more. Follow the sections below to get started.
Test the Cables & Pads
Sometimes you may run into an issue where a drum or cymbal pad triggers intermittently or not at all. The first step in the troubleshooting process is to check the cables and pads.
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable, and ensure it is fully inserted. If that doesn’t work, connect the cable from the faulty trigger to a working pad.
- If the pad triggers, that means the cable is working.
- Check that each cable is connected to the correct pad, and if your module has 1/4-inch I/O connections, be sure you connect to the right trigger input and output.
- The cables are often labeled for your convenience, making it easier to recognize which cable goes to which pad.
Are the cymbal pads not choking?
Some cymbal pads have multiple zones, meaning you can trigger different sounds (e.g., bell, choke, crash). The first trigger is for the whole cymbal, and another zone is at the edge, which is often used for choking. The edge trigger is only located on the opposite side of the logo, so if your electronic cymbal isn’t choking, make sure the logo is facing you.

Adjust the Electronic Drum Module Settings
Not all drummers have the same playstyle, so if you’ve confirmed the cable and pad are working but you’re still having problems, the issue may lie in the module settings. The three primary settings to look at are sensitivity, threshold, and crosstalk (x-talk).
Navigating settings on modules differ between manufacturers, so refer to the manual for instructions on adjusting the settings. Check out our guide on electronic drum terms to learn more about each setting and how it works!
Drum module firmware updates and factory reset
There may be a time when you still run into problems even after optimizing your drum module’s settings. This could be caused by the module’s firmware or other internal settings.
First, perform a factory reset to revert the module to its original settings. Note that this will erase all user presets. After resetting, check the manufacturer’s website for any available firmware updates.
Electronic Drum Tips & Tricks
Electronic drums are very different and more sensitive than acoustic drums, so taking basic preventive steps will extend the life of your drum set. Here are a few tips to get the most out of it.
- Don’t hit the pads too hard. It can cause damage to the internal trigger.
- Use a plastic or rubber bass drum pedal beater if possible, especially if your bass drum pad has a mesh head. This helps extend the life of the drumhead, and will reduce friction and tearing.
- If your module has 1/4-inch connectors, use balanced TRS cables.Place the drum set on a carpet or drum rug to reduce vibration and prevent it from moving around.
- Although it may take a little time, adjusting your settings will ensure you get the best possible performance—your effort will pay off!
