DFX-1 Firmware Update
Walrus Audio will periodically release firmware updates, which often address bugs present in the current version or add quality-of-life features. Check out our “Walrus Audio Guitar Pedal Firmware Update” guide to learn how to update the firmware on your DFX-1.
Setup & Connections
IMPORTANT! The Walrus Audio DFX-1 will only fit Roland SPD-SX compatible stands.
If you’re new to the world of effects pedals, then don’t worry! Setup is a breeze with the DFX-1. There are just a few key things to remember during the setup process.
- Only use the included power supply! Walrus Audio also recommends not using a daisy-chain power supply.
- If you’re using a condenser microphone, then be sure to connect it before pressing the +48V button to turn on phantom power. Press the button again to turn off phantom power before unplugging the microphone.
- You can incorporate external effects pedals by using the SEND and RETURN jacks. The effects loop can even be placed anywhere in the signal chain! Learn how to customize the effects loop below.
- While you can place the mic anywhere, use a conventional mic pattern or placement for the optimal effect.
- We highly recommend having a helping hand during the setup process. Learn more in our article “How to Mic a Drum Kit.”
- You can control various operations on the DFX-1 with a MIDI controller. Connect the controller to the MIDI In using a 5-pin MIDI cable.
- If you want to control other gear with the same controller, then connect the gear via the MIDI Thru jack.
Using the Module
The DFX-1 allows you to put effects processing in your hands. Its ease of use is perfect for on-the-fly changes both in the studio and onstage. Here are the basics to get you started!
- Pad A bypasses the DFX-1 signal, Pad B is dedicated to scrolling through presets, and Pad C controls tap tempo.
- While the entire pad is sensitive, it’s best to strike the pad close to the center for the best response.
- Press the Forward and Reverse buttons to set the effects order.
- Forward: EQ > Noise Gate > Comp > Saturation > Delay > Reverb
- Reverse: EQ > Noise Gate > Saturation > Reverb > Delay > Comp
- You can access secondary effects controls by pressing the Menu knob then adjusting the parameters. Alternatively, press and hold either the Forward or Reverse key button to adjust on the fly.
- Three presets can be saved and assigned to each pad. In other words, presets 1–3 can be saved to Pad A, presets 4–6 to Pad B, and presets 7–9 to Pad C.
- To save presets, press the Menu knob, scroll to Presets, and then select Save.
Addressing Latency
There will be a slight amount of latency in the processed audio coming from the DFX-1. By default, there will be 2.9ms of latency, or 5.2ms with the effects loop engaged. Though, you can adjust the latency within any DAW or on a digital mixer.
When recording, simply record all audio and then nudge the processed DFX-1 audio forward by 2.9ms (5.2ms if the effects loop is engaged). If you’re playing live, then simply add a light delay plug-in to all drum mics — except the DFX-1 — and adjust it so that the audio is aligned.
- The DFX-1 was made with DAWs and digital mixers in mind, so while you can still use the DFX-1 with an analog mixing board, it will take more time and finesse to achieve the desired results.
