When using my Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 with Pro Tools, I can’t get hardware inserts to work properly.
Using hardware inserts in Pro Tools with a Saffire Pro 40 can be tricky. Pro Tools uses a 1-to-1 input/output matching scheme with hardware inserts. However, the Saffire Pro 40 has 10 analog outputs, but only 8 analog inputs. This means that after you use the first 8 hardware inserts, things start to get a little skewed. Refer to the following chart:
As you can see, once you get to Pro Tools insert number 9, the I/O on the Saffire Pro 40 no longer lines up. It’s possible to use inserts 9 – 12, but you will need SPDIF converters to do so. Once you get to insert 13, you can send out ADAT 1 and return on ADAT 3. Inserts 19 and 20 cannot be used.
