macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility Guide
Apple released macOS Tahoe 26 on September 15, 2025.
Mac users are excited about the capabilities and features of Apple’s newest operating system, but as we do every year, we urge content creators not to upgrade to the latest macOS right away. It’s a virtual certainty that some of the third-party software and hardware that you used with your previous version of macOS will not run correctly on macOS Tahoe 26.
Sweetwater is your one-stop resource for information on music, pro audio and content creation on the Mac platform. As we see each year when a new version of macOS is released, the manufacturers and developers of hardware and software designed for the Mac must test their products and release updates to ensure compatibility. That will take time. Those of us who use a Mac to create content need to be patient, and wait to upgrade until we are certain that the tools we use are available in macOS Tahoe-compatible versions.
When will it be safe for you to upgrade? We wrote this article to help you decide.
Our macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility chart points you to the information you need from over 200 manufacturers and developers of pro audio, music, and content-creation software and hardware. We will be updating this chart with the latest news all through the year.
We can’t stress it enough: macOS Tahoe is a worthwhile upgrade, but if you are professional content creator, you need to wait until you determine that all the components you need are in place before you install macOS Tahoe.

What Is macOS Tahoe 26 Beta?
A beta version of an operating system is a preliminary and unstable work-in-progress released so that the third-party developers who write software for the platform can test their products for compatibility.
Apple provided successive pre-release beta versions of macOS Tahoe to developers and the public beginning with their announcement at the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 9, 2025.
The beta period of macOS Tahoe 26.0 ended on September 15, 2025. However, for software developers, Apple continues to provides beta versions of future updates to macOS Tahoe 26.
On general principles, you should never install a beta version of an operating system on your audio and music production computer. Here are two big reasons:
- It’s a beta, which means it’s not done yet. It will be unstable and prone to crashing, and not all promised features will be implemented.
- If you are a musician, audio professional, or content creator, and you rely on numerous pieces of hardware and software from companies other than Apple, it’s virtually certain that some of your hardware and software will not work correctly on a beta version of an operating system. The manufacturers and developers of the hardware and software you own will not provide you with tech support if you use them on a beta version of macOS.
What was the macOS Tahoe 26 Release Date?
Apple released macOS Tahoe 26 on September 15, 2025.
macOS Tahoe 26 Features
What’s all the excitement about? Here are some new features in macOS Tahoe.
Liquid Glass
Apple has a “delightful” new design for its user interface, which is also used in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS26. Icons, windows, menus, buttons and navigational elements have a new look and new behaviors.
Apple Intelligence
The Apple Intelligence (AI) features, including integration with ChatGPT, were the big news in 2024’s macOS Sequoia. With Tahoe, Apple Intelligence continues to develop and to be integrated into more apps in new ways, with Apple’s commitment to security and privacy.
In Tahoe, AI is integrated into the new Live Translation feature for text and speech in Messages, FaceTime and the new macOS Phone app. This will facilitate your understanding and communicating with people who speak other languages.
Shortcuts have new actions incorporating Apple Intelligence. Image Playground has been expanded with ChatGPT styles.
Continuity
Sequoia introduced iPhone Mirroring, which lets you view your iPhone’s screen on your Mac’s screen and to control your iPhone from your Mac. Tahoe goes even further with the new Phone app for Mac. It lets you make and answer calls on your Mac which are routed through your iPhone. Live Activities from your iPhone will appear on your Mac. New Call Screening and Hold Assist features will help you manage phone calls.
Spotlight
Spotlight has received a huge upgrade that can give you a productivity boost. It now does a lot more than search for files on your Mac. Right from the keyboard, you can directly execute hundreds of actions by running automated scripts for routine tasks that you can easily create in the Shortcuts app. You can send an email, take a note, play podcasts, and more. Apple reports that finding files and searching with filters will be even faster.
Other features
There’s now a Journal app for Mac.
Apple has brought out a new Games app for chatting with friends while displaying leaderboards. The new Metal 4 API provides developers with more powerful tools to create games for Mac and to port them from other platforms.
Tahoe brings enhanced features in Accessibility, Family parental controls, Photos, FaceTime, Reminders, Messages, Passwords and Notes.
Many features within apps mentioned above incorporate Apple Intelligence. Those will only be available on a Mac with Apple silicon. On an Intel-based Mac running Tahoe, those features won’t be available.
Should I Upgrade to macOS Tahoe 26?
Yes, you should, but not right away! You need to plan for the right time. Here’s what to consider.
If you work with pro audio, music, or content creation, and you have a Mac running a previous version of macOS, you have built a system that’s stable. Each component is functioning correctly, and you can get work done. Upgrading to Tahoe will bring benefits, for sure, but if you make the move too soon, you’ll be disrupting your stable system. Before you upgrade, you must confirm that the manufacturers of your hardware and software have new versions you can install that provide compatibility with Tahoe.
Third-party hardware and software compatibility
You rely on your DAW, plug-ins, virtual instruments, and other music and audio apps, as well as hardware such as an audio interface and MIDI controllers. Even after the release of macOS Tahoe 26.0, it will be weeks or even months until third-party developers offer Tahoe-compatible updates. This isn’t unusual; it’s what Mac content creators have to deal with every year.
You may also learn that some pieces of software or hardware you have used for years are no longer supported by their manufacturers and will not be offered in versions compatible with macOS Tahoe. In that case, you’ll need to make decisions about replacing these with newer apps or devices.
32-bit software is incompatible with macOS
There may still be users out there who have an Intel-based Mac running 32-bit software and plug-ins. The last version of macOS that could run 32-bit code was macOS 10.14 Mojave from 2018. Every version of macOS since then requires apps that run 64-bit code. If you are still relying on 32-bit apps, then before you get a new Mac and upgrade to Tahoe, you need to check with the manufacturers of all your apps and plug-ins to obtain 64-bit versions. Before you upgrade, you should also archive and save any work you created with those 32-bit versions on your old Mac.
What about macOS Tahoe 26 on an Intel-based Mac, versus a Mac with Apple silicon?
In 2023, Apple phased out the last of the Mac models with an Intel CPU. All current Mac computers have an Apple silicon chip (M1, M2, M3, M4).
The first Mac with Apple silicon was introduced in late 2020. Here at Sweetwater, our audio engineers continue to be amazed at the tremendous gains in system performance and audio processing power that each new version of the Apple silicon chip provides, especially compared to the older-generation Intel-based Mac.
macOS Tahoe will run on any Mac with Apple silicon, but it will also run on four particular models of Intel-based Mac made in 2019 and 2020, as we explain below. Apple has confirmed that macOS Tahoe 26 is the last version of macOS that will support any Intel-based Mac. If you are still on an Intel-based Mac, we recommend that you make the move to a new Mac with Apple silicon: a Mac desktop or a MacBook. If you buy a Mac with the current macOS 15 Sequoia, resist the urge to upgrade to Tahoe right away; you need to wait for compatibility for your hardware and software.
macOS Security
Every year, Apple’s new operating system brings the latest security features, and those are important. You should know, however, that Apple will also provide these new security features in future software updates for macOS 15 Sequoia. They’ll do this for two years after the release of Tahoe. So yes, you should upgrade to Tahoe eventually, but security isn’t necessarily a reason to be in a hurry. You’ve got time.

macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility: Software and Hardware
Compatibility with your DAW
Your digital audio workstation (DAW) is the heart of your workflow. If you upgrade to macOS Tahoe and then discover that the version of the DAW you are using is incompatible with Tahoe, you will be seriously disrupted in your ability to create content. It’s imperative that you wait to upgrade to macOS Tahoe until after the developer of your DAW announces a version with macOS Tahoe compatibility. Check the macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility chart below to find a link to the latest support information and compatibility announcements from your DAW’s developer.
Compatibility for plug-ins
Your existing plug-ins will need a DAW that is macOS Tahoe-compatible in which to run. But you still need to check with the plug-in developers to confirm compatibility and to install the newest updates.
Compatibility for sound libraries
Some developers provide sound libraries that run under another company’s sampler software app. The best-known example is Kontakt by Native Instruments. Compatibility for those libraries will, therefore, not arrive until the developer of the sampler app releases an update that supports macOS Tahoe. That’s why you need to check with the developers of both your sound libraries and your sampler app.
Apple silicon native software
If you have a Mac with Apple silicon, you need to update your third-party software to versions that are Apple silicon native in order to take full advantage of the computing power of your Mac.
Learn more in our SweetCare guide Mac with Apple silicon vs. Intel-based Mac: What You Need to Know.
Drivers and Class-compliant Hardware
Certain audio interfaces and MIDI devices may not be compatible with macOS Tahoe right away. If a manufacturer states that a device is class compliant on macOS, then this means that it should already be compatible. However, many devices require custom driver software that will most likely have to be updated for compatibility. Check with the manufacturer first.
macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility by Manufacturers and Developers
Even though macOS Tahoe 26.0 has been released, most third-party hardware manufacturers and software developers will advise customers to stay with a previous macOS version (macOS 15 Sequoia or earlier) and refrain from upgrading to macOS Tahoe 26 until they announce that the newest versions of their products are compatible.

Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. Select manufacturers may require that only the manufacturer’s products qualify towards the minimum purchase amount needed to be eligible for promotional financing. Otherwise, an invoice that meets the minimum purchase amount and contains at least one qualifying manufacturer product is eligible for promotional financing. No interest will be charged on promo purchase balance, and equal monthly payments are required on promo purchase until it is paid in full. The payments equal the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next whole dollar. These payments may be higher than the payments that would be required if this purchase was a non-promo purchase. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to the prior months’ rounding. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. Min Interest Charge is $2. Existing cardholders: See your credit card agreement terms. Subject to credit approval.
Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. No interest will be charged on the promo balance if you pay it off, in full, within the promo period. If you do not, interest will be charged on the promo balance from the purchase date. The required minimum monthly payments may or may not pay off the promo balance before the end of the promo period, depending on purchase amount, promo length and payment allocation. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases and, after promo period ends, to the promo balance. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. Min Interest Charge is $2. Existing cardholders: See your credit card agreement terms. Subject to credit approval.
The estimated required monthly payment shown which excludes taxes and delivery equals the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next cent. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to this rounding. These payments apply only with the financing offer shown. If you make these payments by the due date each month, you should pay off this amount financed within the promo period, if it is the only balance you are paying off. If you have other balances on your account, this payment will be added to any other minimum monthly payments.
