PRS Silver Sky
Designed in collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and John Mayer, the PRS Silver Sky represents an idealized elevation of the vintage three-pickup formula. Every element of this six-string — from the pickups to the neck profile to even the headstock shape — was laboriously tweaked and modified over a two-year development period to meet John’s exacting requirements. For inspiration, the pair drew from real-world examples of their favorite golden-era instruments. The result? An impeccable instrument that captures the soul and style of the original while simultaneously pushing its playability and performance into the stratosphere.
The PRS Silver Sky’s trio of PRS 635JM pickups sing with a decidedly vintage-tinged tone, replicating the bell-like chime, warmth, and glassy character of the original three-pickup solidbody’s sound without ever venturing into ice-pick territory. They were developed by using John’s favorite vintage ’63 and ’64 pickups as inspiration. And much to the pleasure of vintage S-style fans everywhere, PRS Silver Sky models also leverage a modern wiring scheme that allows you to shape the bridge position’s bite with the tone knob — a luxury not present on early-1960s S-style guitars.
The Silver Sky began as a collaboration between John Mayer and PRS, and now it’s Sweetwater’s turn to join in the fun. Our Sweetwater-exclusive PRS SE Silver Sky models boast stunning Gold Spark and Platinum Spark finishes hand-selected by the guitarist himself specifically for Sweetwater! What’s more, both models feature sparkling, color-matched truss rod covers — and you can only get them at Sweetwater!
Whether with Dead & Company, the John Mayer Trio, or solo, John Mayer has spent nearly three decades tearing up stages with his brilliant, bluesy chops and superb songwriting. Naturally, a musician of his caliber requires an instrument with the highest performance quality possible — and that’s exactly what the PRS Silver Sky delivers, from the comfortable scoop on the alder body that offers extended upper-fret access to the top-shelf PRS vintage-style locking tuners and Gen III tremolo.
Just like the pickups, the Silver Sky’s comfortable neck profile represents a seamless marriage of John Mayer’s favorite elements from vintage ’63 and ’64 S-style guitars. True to Paul’s offbeat sense of humor, the profile’s “635JM” title pays tribute to the fact — think of it as a “63.5.” Topside, the Silver Sky sports a 7.25-inch radius (8.5-inch on the SE Silver Sky models) with slightly smaller frets to ensure an authentic vintage feel on your fingers.
