PRS Silver Sky Electric Guitar - Frost with Rosewood Fingerboard Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Alder Body, Maple Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, and 3 Single-coil Pickups - Frost

The PRS Silver Sky was designed by Paul Reed Smith and built to John Mayer's specifications. This vintage-inspired guitar boasts a familiar shape with an eye-catching contrasting tone in its cutaway scoop. Its neck carve, scale length, and fingerboard radius were modeled after John's early-'60s instruments; however, a modified PRS-style headstock and locking tuners propel it firmly into the twenty-first century. Park this axe in front of any tube amp, and its sweet-sounding single-coil pickups will churn out glassy, musical tones with excellent note definition. Beyond that, the Silver Sky includes a bone nut, molded metal jack plate, retooled knobs, custom fret-wire, and PRS's double-action truss rod.

JM knows his guitars

By B from F on August 23, 2023 Music Background: Average armature player

If you like Strat's you will love this guitar. PRS has hit a home run with this guitar, can't think of a single thing that could be better. It just feels great in my hands, but most important it sounds wonderful! Because lets face it you don't buy a guitar for the feel you buy it for the sound. If it does not feel good in your hands you may not buy it. But this feels and sounds great. Buy one if a great feeling and sounding strat is your type guitar. No down side here, other than cost but even that is in line with a Custom shop Fender.

I didn't think I would bond with the guitar

By Bob F from Louisiana on December 5, 2022 Music Background: Not good enough for this guitar.

First off I am not a Strat guy, I have them because I collect guitars, A Mexican Strat was my first real guitar. I will always have it because it was my first real guitar. I have an EJ custom so I have a higher end Strat also. But over time and with more guitars I found I was always reaching for the humbuckers. I just like the fuller tone, clean or dirty the humbuckers have. I bought the guitar on backorder 8 months ago, mostly because of all the good things I had heard about it that changed from and overcame the hate it received when it first came out. I knew I could always turn it down when it came in, thankfully I went ahead and had Jeff Bohan (great guy) send it. Like I said I am not a single coil guy, never really and fully bonded with the sound. UNTIL NOW! This guitar sounds awesome. Very rich and full sound, all the ear candy of a humbucker but with that extra clarity of the single coil. I have absolutely no idea how PRS did that. The feel fit and finish are 100% up to PRS standards. I was a little worried about the 7.25 radius but to be honest it's a non factor, the guitar just feels so natural in my hand. It does take a slight adjustment to strum or pick, that is the only place I notice the radius. My one and only complaint is I still can't play as well as JM, so apparently it's skill sold separately, but since I love to play it maybe a little more skill will come with the guitar over time. Even if you're a humbucker guy, if you have the means pick one of these up. You will not be disappointed.

I'm impressed

By Daniel from Seattle, WA on June 25, 2021

I didn't quite expected how amazing this guitar would be. But first, the bad part. The volume and tone knobs are horrible. I have never even seen a guitar over $1000 with such bad knobs. It feels like bad plastic.

With that out of the way, boy this guitar is amazing... Playability is off the charts. I don't think I've ever played a guitar easier to play. The sound is great. It does have more bite and treble that the fenders and I compensated that by lowering the pickups. Then it really took off.

However, the most amazing thing about this guitar is how resonant it is. It sometimes almost feels like a semi-hollow (to a low extent).

I have a Gibson 335 and this guitar is now my favorite.

PRS has done it again! This collab with Mayer is perfect! You've got to get your hands on one and try it for yourself.

PRS Silver Sky

By Keith Considine from Anderson, IN on July 16, 2020

I am not a professional player. Only have been trying to play for the past 4 years. I am 40 now, hard to say. Just started 4 years ago with an acoustic I bought from Sweetwater. I guess you can say I got hooked trying to find my sound. I have 10 guitars now and 4 amps. Along with all that other stuff you can get, pedals and whatnot. However, with this guitar I love it. The Sound is great. The neck is a little curvy for me. I really do prefer my Fender Strat Elite neck. By the way, I have 2 Fender Strats, Tele, Les paul, a PRS SE Custom 24 and a other lower end guitars. This PRS Silver Sky in my opinion looks fantastic, my favorite when comes to looks, sound. However, I prefer the Fender necks. MAIN purpose is to shout out to my Sales Rep DAVID WINKERT. Without him and his job on getting me that deal, I would not have this guitar. He is a rising shining sales start. Thanks you so much David!

Beautiful full tone

By Christian Blankenship from Chino, CA on April 30, 2020 Music Background: Multi-instrumentalist, band frontman, drummer

I have a pretty decent collection of about ten guitars. It by far has the best and most beautiful tone out of all of them. Love this guitar.

STRAT with PRS Quality

By Anton Periquet on January 31, 2020 Music Background: Gigging musician

Playability is incredible - probably the best of the many strats I own, including makes by Tom Anderson and Lentz. No fret buzz anywhere, despite low action. Stays in tune, too. Sound is big, clear and complex, rivalling that of my Lentz. No dips in output or treble in positions 2 and 4. Light weight is a welcome bonus. I would wholeheartedly recommend this guitar to strat-lovers. Service from Sweetwater excellent as usual - thank you, Ryan.

Silk

It’s a wonderful investment these guys really made a beautiful guitar. Everything has been thought out plays like silk. The tremolo is lovely.

I Love This Guitar!!!

By Greer Streetman from Lexington, KY on February 6, 2019 Music Background: 55 Years of bands, bands, bands.

OK, I have been playing since I was 12 and I'm 67. I have had lots and lots of guitars. Played lots and lots of guitars, Droodled (my word) on lots and lots of guitars! This is it! Even though I played Humbucker guitars, and several Les Paul's, Mossrite, PRS, Fender, Guild, Danelectro, BC Rich, Tiesco and Gibson 335 guitars, Seymour-Duncan's, Fender's, Lace, DiMarzio, Beneditto, Razor, BC Rich, Gibson and Fender pickups, I absolute get mooshey inside playing and listening to creamy single coils on a tight body. I can always tell what is playing unless it's a hybrid or something.
Being an old-style rock and bluegrass picker, I teach both styles and all in-between. I play in different types of bands and weekly in a large church Praise Band, at 67 (and I ain't ugly and all used up!). I absolutely am in love with the sound of this fine instrument. I have owned PRS and it is a guitar player's guitar. Sorry, Gibson and Fender, but PRS is in a class above, I feel like this. If this was a Chevrolet (say USA Fender, GHS or Suhr) any other maker in that price point, it better be the best. So, this is like a nice Cadillac or Lexus at an awesome price, incredibly well made and an awesome sound, really! I bet you I could buy the best regular, everyday Fender, at this price point and get less than this GUITAR. This is a 1st run for me, but it has been in use since the 3 months it took me to wait for it. The white is pristine as the sound. Man, the sound says it all.
This my current favorite due to it's killer tone. Playing any and all famous guitar parts, this guitar makes. It's incredible how this sounds in so many songs. It's incredible. Effects even sound better! Gotta love effects. Get one, have fun, not a lotta mon.

You won't be sorry...

By Uncle T on January 5, 2019

I have had this guitar for about 6 weeks now and have to say I'm blown away! I have a lot of great guitars so was a bit apprehensive about the price...totally worth it, although I agree with the sentiment that it should come with a hard shell case at this price point. It took over 3 months from order to arrive (Thanks to my rep Mason Hunter for all the quick follow ups!) Since it has, I can't put it down...it is so comfortable to play, I find myself inspired to play more. Definitely a keeper...and will prob sell off a few that will never see daylight now that I have this.
