PRS Silver Sky Electric Guitar - Tungsten with Rosewood Fingerboard Reviews
The PRS Silver Sky was designed by Paul Reed Smith and built to John Mayer's specifications. This vintage-inspired guitar boasts a familiar shape with an eye-catching contrasting tone in its cutaway scoop. Its neck carve, scale length, and fingerboard radius were modeled after John's early-'60s instruments; however, a modified PRS-style headstock and locking tuners propel it firmly into the twenty-first century. Park this axe in front of any tube amp, and its sweet-sounding single-coil pickups will churn out glassy, musical tones with excellent note definition. Beyond that, the Silver Sky includes a bone nut, molded metal jack plate, retooled knobs, custom fret-wire, and PRS's double-action truss rod.

Looks and status
This beautiful guitar is fantastic from all aspects. The John Mayer thing wasn't a big selling point for me, but that fellow obviously knows his strats. He brought in decades of scrutinizing the coveted, best strats in existence to Paul Reed, and made a masterpiece of playability with this silver sky! Love it more than words can be written.
Amazing
Great product!! Definitely worth the money. Sam is always a pleasure to deal with on my purchases
It’s great
Prs build is great and the sound is kinda prs but it has its own thing going on .
I personally love the sound as for gigbag its good enough.
The neck is thick but that can be a really good thing for your hands ,I find my self being able to play for a long time with out pain in the wrist.
The frets are small but feel good .
The tremolo is very stable
Amazing Guitar!!!
I have been reading reviews for months and finally decided to pull the trigger and buy a Sliver Sky. I am so glad I did!!! The tungsten color is beautiful and the finish is perfection. The fret board feels smooth as glass, and the action was perfect with no adjustments necessary. I love the neck profile...for me it fits my hand perfectly. The guitar feels amazing...I really don't know how else to describe the feel.
Now for the sound...the pickups sound great. Clean...crunchy...lots of gain...everything in between...the pickups sound great. Get one of these guitars...you'll be glad you did!
Love this guitar
I purchased this guitar two years ago. The moment and funds arrived and I had every intention of getting a custom shop strat. I then hear of the Mayer collaboration with PRS. I'll disclose that I'm not an obsessed Mayer fan. I do appreciate his ability and I also like how he's made guitar more accessible. That being said, I always wanted a PRS and a crossroads lay before me.
I call Sweetwater and my sales engineer Jonathan Casarow proceeds to listen to me groan on this dilemma. Jonathan reminds me I can always return it if I'm unhappy with the guitar. That was enough me to move forward and I waited anxiously for tracking information.
I received the Silver Sky on a Friday in January. The temperature in NY was below zero to -10 all week. I leave the box in my studio and leave town to visit a friend for the weekend. I anxiously return on Sunday and open the box. The tungsten finish and rosewood fingerboard is beautiful. The most amazing thing to this day was the guitar was still in tune.
I love everything about this guitar. My hands are on it every single day I'm near or around it. Everything fits well for me and it's very light. The sound is really amazing. The versatility of the pickup positions and the range of the tone knobs make the Silver Sky shine. Each pickup presents a unique usable sound and the tone knobs give you a wide range to explore. I feel like I can squeeze any kind of sound out of a neck that feels perfect in my hands. Everything is comfortable and nothing is "in the way".
I have no regrets getting this guitar and cannot thank my sales engineer Jonathan Casarow and Sweetwater enough.
WOW what an amazing guitar
I bought a tungsten silver sky with rosewood fingerboard. The photos don't do it justice. The color is better even in person.
The guitar feels and plays just as great as my vintage strat, maybe better.
If you like strats and can afford a silver sky, get it. You won't be disappointed.
Better than getting a $35,000 vintage guitar!
I owned an American Professional Stratocaster, so at first I thought this might be overkill. It's just a PRS that looks like a Strat, right?
WRONG.
The difference is there as soon as you put a strap on it and hang it. The weight of the Strat is totally absent. It's replaced by this piece that feels like it's an extension of your body. It feels significantly lighter, and the back contours seem a little more "in touch" with your midsection. The weight is perfectly balanced. It reminds me of my equatorial telescope mount, the guitar just kind of swings effortless in motion from the neck near my waist to up close and personal. This doesn't feel like a musical instrument, it feels like a body part.
Playing notes unamplified is even satisfying, as every note from frets 5-10 can be felt vibrating against your body when you pick it. And those pickups! Jeez, the sound is heavenly. I was a bit shocked at first, because Alnico 5s tend to have a little less sweetness than say 2 or 3, but the Alnico 5 pickups in the neck and middle are perfectly sweet and round. Roll the treble control down and you have the PRS Jazz-o-Matic. Seriously, it has such an incredible dark thump to it while retaining clarity. I never stop to think "I need to change guitars if I'm going to play some Jazz," I just roll that treble knob down. Boom. Instant jazz sound.
All five pickup positions are musical. I still prefer the neck by itself, but all five positions are capable of outstanding sounds, and I even find myself going middle pickup only when I want more of the body of the neck, but a little more treble attack.
And to make matters better, I don't look at it now as a Strat replacement, they both have very distinct sounds from one another. This is more my "holy grail guitar" and less of my "knocking around at the house" pick. Bottom line, it plays as nice or nicer than any vintage guitar, is more reliable, and feels like you've known it all your life.
Old School Strat turned into a space ship!
PRS has done it again! This collab with Mayer is perfect! You've got to get your hands on one and try it for yourself.
An Amazing Guitar!
Wow, love this guitar! I've had it about a week and can't put it down. Have some other nice guitars, too (SG Standard, Telecaster, Martin acoustic, Strat) but this one seems to fit like a glove. And the neck is very comfortable.
And a shout out to my sales engineer, Devin Cunnigham, who's always been very helpful and was so again for this purchase.
STRAT with PRS Quality
Playability is incredible - probably the best of the many strats I own, including makes by Tom Anderson and Lentz. No fret buzz anywhere, despite low action. Stays in tune, too. Sound is big, clear and complex, rivalling that of my Lentz. No dips in output or treble in positions 2 and 4. Light weight is a welcome bonus. I would wholeheartedly recommend this guitar to strat-lovers. Service from Sweetwater excellent as usual - thank you, Ryan.
This guitar just feels right
This is the first guitar I"ve owned that feels truly effortless to play, I think it"s ruined me for all others. Only thing I would change is that I might buy a second one.
Outstanding Instrument
This is truly an outstanding piece of craftsmanship. When I first plugged the guitar in, held the vintage feeling neck, and played the first few single note runs out of the neck pickup, I was beyond impressed and immediately felt sad for all of the guitars I own that would no longer be played. The feel is so comfortable, the sound so even out of all five positions, this is just a superlative instrument. One thing I really appreciated was that the tone controls are totally usable throughout their entire ranges. There are no ice pick shrills, no farty bottom end. And this guitar is not just usable for nice blues, but I've already found that with the right pedals, it is a perfectly capable guitar for some nice David Gilmour-esque sounds as well. It has certainly left me feeling like I need to trim my collection down to this and my American Tele!
Unparalleled Fit and Finish!
I have 3 Custom Shop Strats (which I love) and the Silver Sky is at least equal to them in build quality and sound. I hold this in my hands and just marvel at the level of detail and fit and finish that is the hallmark of PRS. That is the one area where they may slightly exceed Fender, but we are splitting hairs as a CS Fender Strat is a pretty awesome instrument.
Personally I think this guitar looks best in Tungsten, but any color will do! I love switching between a Strat and the Silver Sky. It is very similar to a Strat, but different enough to offer its own unique playing experience. I love the 7.25" radius as I also have a CS 12" radius and I thought this was going to be an issue. No issue at alI! I have never "fretted out" and the playability is like butter.
I bought this as I was considering the purchase of a Pewter Clapton Strat and this one caught my eye. While I respect John Mayer's guitar playing, I would not consider myself a raving fan. However, I am a huge fan of the John Mayer PRS Silver Sky. Play one and so will you!! :)
Silver Sky Delivers
I recently purchased this guitar after many hours of research. I have always wanted a PRS because of their reputation for quality. The guitar looks like a classic Fender but when put in your hands its definitely a PRS. Its a classic look with modern flare and features. Every time I play this guitar I cant get the smile off my face.
An amazing and versatile piece of gear!
I have had my Silver Sky for about three months now and have been more happy with it each day. It is the best sounding and most easy to play guitar I've had the pleasure to use. It perfectly captures all the classic single-coil sounds. I'm inspired to play just by looking at it. Paired with my Vox AC15 the chime is truly beautiful. The only issue I had is a small indent on the back on the neck. It is barely visible, but unfortunately lands right where my thumb is on for an F chord. I'm not sure whether the indent occurred at the PRS factory or while being packed for shipping by Sweetwater, but I'm sure I'll forget it is there eventually.
Pros:
Perfectly captures that classic single-coil tone
Looks and sounds beautiful
Plays like a dream
Cons:
Indent on neck, though hard to see, can be felt
Silver Sky
The modern look too me some time to get used to. This guitar is a home run. It sounds amazing, totally comfortable, tones for days........I have several custom shop strats and this killed them all.
Great Modern Interpretation of a Vintage Strat
As a huge John Mayer fan, this guitar has been a long time coming. I received this guitar last month after about 6 months of painful waiting but it was so worth it. I saw John Mayer play this guitar multiple times last year during his Search for Everything tour and as odd as it seemed with the reversed PRS headstock and all, it sounded incredible. His usual go-to guitar is his 63' sunburst strat and he would play most of the show with just the two guitars and they were noticeably different in a very unique way. His Fender had a more rounded, warmer tone to it where as the PRS had a much more crisp clarity to it that I haven't heard before.
I own the Fender John Mayer signature strat, which is an amazing guitar in itself, and just upgraded to this amazing PRS. I am a strat guy and I've played countless Fender strats in-store but I recall only a very select few stood out (including the Mayer strat). This guitar right out of the box, sounded and felt right. Its got that top notch quality PRS is known for and got all of characteristics you want in a strat with better pickup nuances higher definition sound. I know there's a lot of heat around this guitar but go and play it in store (if they even have one in store... probably not) and please tell me I'm wrong. Damon Mitchell was my sales engineer and he was very helpful and patient guy to work with. Highly recommend!
The best Leo ever!!!
Only so much, I own Strats from the 50s,60s and 70s.Each of them is great in it"s own way, and each one of them has one flaw. This guitar feels like something that would happen if Leo were to reincarnate and sign on with Paul to create an updated, contemporary version of his original vision. I compare the vintage 50s to my vintage Porsche, whereas the Silver Sky is like my 2015 911 convertible.
PRS silver sky
I got my PRS silver sky in tungsten today. As for looks the guitar is gorgeous as every PRS is the paint job is superb and the body contour looks great. The best part of the guitar the is the neck and pickups. I own 6 strats including the John Mayer signature one and an vintage 1969 strat. The neck on this feels better then all of them and the fretwork is on point. As for the pickups. They are hotter then the john mayer strat but in a good way you get even output through all 5 switchs which is never the case in most strats and it actually makes the bridge and middle pickup useable which opens another whole dimension of tone. Also wanna give a shoutout to Jason Koons always goes above and beyond to satisfy customers a true professional.
Amazing sound but cheap plastic caps
I'm only writing this review to inform everyone that the plastic blade switch cap will crack in half easily and the numbers will fade off the volume/tone knobs fairly quickly. The guitar itself is exactly what I wanted in a strat. Perfect Yellow Ledbetter type tone is easy and effortless through a twin and it handles gain better than other strats I've owned. Fit and finish is exactly what you expect from PRS. Small gripe with the plastic parts but I love this guitar.
Good Guitar - Bad Case/Bag
I waited quite a while for this guitar and my friends at Sweetwater came though getting me one as soon as possible. The instrument plays very well and it soon feels like it is part of your hands. It has a ton of tones and can do everything from Jazz to Hendrix. My only complaint is that it comes with a gig bag. That's right a gig bag and not a hard shell case. This makes no sense and just leaves a bad taste in your mouth each time you take it out to play. I'm waiting for the "real case" which is supposed to be available in the future. Maybe they will do a trade-in/upgrade for those of us who were early adopters. I have 8 other PRS guitars and none came with a gig bag. What's up with that Paul?
Beware of Tall Frets
First off, I love this guitar. It has a wonderful tone and looks and plays great, however, the super tall frets were not for me. Being mostly an acoustic guitar player I press down too hard so I was always playing out of tune. It was worse if you just played "cowboy" chords in first position, less so up the neck. Just not for me.
So it was either sell it OR fix it. I chose to take it to a local guitar shop and have new frets installed with better frets for my playing style. it is now a FIVE STAR guitar.
It is just something to be aware of. If you can afford this guitar, hopefully, you can also afford to have it re-fretted if playing with a super light touch is not your bag.
Pretty nice
Owning 2 CS Strats, a Nash Strat & an EBMM Cutlass I was really skeptical the JMSS could offer anything new. I was wrong. My Fender & Nash strats are more "weighty/traditional" feeing whereby the Cutlass and JMSS are more alike and "modern" (except JMSS has a very nice fatter neck and very playable vintage radius).
We very surprised at the beautiful glassy tone in all positions on the JMSS... just couldn"t believe how well it sounded (quiet & rich with a perfect balance of tone and low noise).
Didn"t even notice the vintage radius although the small frets would have me worrying about replacement too soon (but I guess better than jumbo frets that never feel smooth enough - If they were stainless, they would put my mind more at ease.) Appointments all seem "modernish" and fit the style. It"s a light guitar sofa like my EBMM Cutlass whereby the Nash & Fenders have a bit more thickness/heft.
Really couldn"t get a bad tone or noise out of the guitar. Setup was perfect. Overall quality seemed too notch. While it doesn"t give you the heirloom feel of a Fender CS, it sure sounds great. Is it worth $...+? Not sure... that a decently hefty price tag for a mass produced guitar… The one big miss by PRS on this guitar was yo not include a hard case. For that price it is almost an insult to not include a hardcase. Other than bird inlays and no hardcase, it is an awesome guitar.
Case
How are you gonna sell an over 2000 dollar guitar with that lame case ?
That said the clean of this guitar is amazing and can only be described as pretty .
A very playable guitar . One that will make an OK guitarist sound better but hard to justify price .
A wise man once told me " Good guitars come with good cases because real luthiers care about their guitars .
