Q: I understand that some guitars have a treble bleed capacitor on the volume control so that when you turn down the volume, you don’t loss all your high end. But my guitar doesn’t lose treble, yet it has no capacitor. What gives?
A: Most likely the pot (or potentiometer) installed in your guitar is of a high value (in ohms). The general principle here is that the lower the pot’s value, the more treble is cut, not in terms of frequency, but rather amplitude. Thus a 250k (or less) pot will lose treble as soon as you start turning it down. Pots with values of 1meg ohm (or higher) will allow more treble to be heard as the volume is turned down. Most single-coil pickup-equipped guitars use 250k pots, while many humbucker guitars generally use 500k pots for volume.
