Any one of a large family of instruments that evolved from lutes. Modern guitars can be acoustic, with steel or nylon strings, or electric. Most have six strings, but there are 12-string acoustic and electric models, as well as some contemporary seven-string instruments. It’s silly to generalize, but most guitars produced today have solid or hollow wood bodies and necks, while electrics have some type of pickup (or set of pickups) that allows the instruments to be amplified.
