We’ve reached a stage of development where you can virtually create an entire recording system in your computer, however, MIDI/keyboard systems have surprisingly lagged behind in development… until now. Propellerhead and Steinberg have changed all of that by shipping the highly anticipated Reason software. Reason is an entire synth and sampler rig, complete with patch bay, all created inside your computer. There are a variety of synths, samplers, rhythm machines, and effects processors at your disposal and the whole system (called a ‘rack’ in their terminology and also depicted this way on screen) is completely configurable. And the whole system weighs in at a mere… well… whatever your computer weighs.
At the recent NAMM show, Roland announced an alliance with AKG. In the past they have had their DR-20 microphone as the main source for COSM mic modeling in VS products. They now have added the AKG C-3000B as a source for Modeling. Possible simulations include U-87, U-47fet, C-451, MD-421, SM-58, and SM-57. Remember with a fully expanded VS-1880, you can do eight mic models simultaneously! The VS-1880 is the only VS that uses the C-3000B so far and you can download the 1.011 version at their website. More updates will be coming shortly.
