This instrument is the training percussionists’ dream. Consisting of a tensioned mesh drumpad and an attached training module using the same electronic percussion technology that the popular V-drum series uses, the Roland RMP-1 solves a great deal of issues that percussionists face.
The RMP-1 is solely a practice tool. The purpose of this instrument is not for performance or recording, but to develop skills such as endurance, speed, and accuracy. Right out of the box I was ready to get started practicing and I was able to do that. In just under three minutes, I stuck the batteries in which were included, connected the pad to the module with cable which was also included, plugged in my headphones and I was listening to real drum sounds. I immediately noticed how similar the mesh head felt to a real drumhead and how essential that is for a practicing percussionist. After playing for a little bit, I wanted to change the drum sound so I pressed a couple buttons and noticed I had close to thirty sounds to choose from. The sounds included consist of acoustical snares, toms, and a kick drum, as well as marching drums and some electric drum sounds to boot. Practice already seemed more enjoyable. I decided to flip on the metronome to get myself in time and found myself scanning through a variety of different metronome sounds. Once I got tired of playing along with one sound I changed it to a hi-hat as my metronome, making my practice less static.
All the while this was going on, another person was in the room reading a book and I didn’t hear a complaint from him! The pad is so quiet it doesn’t disturb people in the same room. Before the RMP-1 this was unheard of since the art of practicing on a drum is usually quite loud. Because of its silence, I was able to practice into the wee hours of the night without disturbing my family members or neighbors. My practice time has quadrupled so far.
The next day I wanted to go to the park and enjoy the fresh air so took the pad with me to try to get some practice in. The pad was light enough to throw into bag and walk comfortably with. I got in some good practice and was on my way.
The pad comes with a coach mode that has preprogrammed exercises to assist me in my practicing. It comes with twelve modes that develop speed, endurance, and rhythmical accuracy that all drummers need. By the time I got through all these modes, I was a significantly better player.
Bottom line: This product is awesome. Designed to be entertaining as well as a serious practice tool, it accomplishes both. Percussionists of all ages can benefit from the versatility the RMP-1 encompasses.
