Gibson Modern Collection
About the Gibson Modern Collection
If you’ve ever picked up a Les Paul or SG and thought, “This guitar is great, but I wish it had X,” then you’re in luck. The Gibson Modern Collection of electric guitars brings a plethora of player favorites into the Gibson mainstream. Now it’s possible to get a weight-relieved Gibson Les Paul with a compound-radius fingerboard and pull pot–activated PAF/P-90 sounds, bone stock. Read on to find out how the Gibson Modern Collection is giving Sweetwater customers a Made 2 Measure playing experience without the Custom Shop price tag.
Gibson Modern: Classic Designs for the Modern Age
All guitars in the Gibson Modern Collection have been designed with two principles in mind: comfort and versatility. The Gibson Les Paul Modern accomplishes this with a weight-relieved body, an asymmetrical-profile SlimTaper neck with a shaved neck heel, and a compound-radius ebony fingerboard. Together, these give modern Les Paul players the edge to survive those 4-hour live sets and marathon recording sessions. The SG Modern borrows the same comfort features from the Les Paul Modern but subs in a AA maple–capped mahogany body: a combination “renowned for its resonance and sustain,” according to Gibson. The ES-335 Modern and ES-339 Modern serve up tones for the modern era with their heritage hand-rolled C-profile necks, lightweight ABR-1 aluminum bridges, and T-Type or '57 Classic humbucking pickups.
A Dizzying Array of Tones on Tap
Both the SG and Les Paul in the Gibson Modern Collection come equipped with Gibson’s Burstbucker Pro humbucking pickups, trailblazers in the golden-age PAF pickup sound. Alnico V magnets and mismatched bobbin windings give these pickups the meaty punch, modern output, and bell-like clarity that players across genres clamor for. But that’s not all. Two push-pull volume pots supply coil-split tones — similar to a Gibson P-90 — in either bridge or neck positions. This unearths a dizzying number of session-mastering tones in the Gibson Les Paul Modern and Gibson SG Modern.
Rock-solid Tuning Performance
Select guitars in the Gibson Modern Collection feature locking Grover Rotomatic tuners with an 18:1 ratio — a common aftermarket upgrade for lickety-split string changes and fine tuning. Be sure to check the product page specs at Sweetwater.com to know if your Gibson Modern guitar comes equipped with locking Grover Rotomatic tuning machines. Or just call your Sales Engineer!
