Gibson SG Modern - Blueberry Fade Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Mahogany Body, Figured Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, Ebony Fretboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Blueberry Fade

The Gibson SG is already a rock icon, but Gibson has upped the ante with the SG Modern. This guitar’s bevy of cutting-edge enhancements includes an eye-popping AA figured maple top, a Graph Tech nut, rock-solid Grover tuners, and push-pull coil tapping. Take hold of the speedy 24-fret SlimTaper neck topped with a bound ebony fretboard, and let ’er rip with a lick or two. Feel the power generated by two split-coil Burstbucker Pro humbuckers. The Gibson SG Modern is way more than an update of a classic solidbody electric — it’s everything a modern rocker could want in a guitar.

Best Overall Versatility and Lightweight Too!

By Thomas Hornor from Alexandria, Louisiana on March 14, 2024

This is a fantastic guitar! The electronics are superior to any Gibson I've ever owned or played. I'm 65 and have been playing since I was 10. I also own a nice, but heavy, Les Paul Standard, and have previously had a 70's SG, a couple of other LP's, and a 1976 ES-335, which I wish I still owned, but don't. As far as this new, amazing SG Modern, the knobs dial in volume and tone exactly like they're supposed to. Plus, the coil tapping feature smoothly gives me more tone options than any other electric I have. Mine maintains an even volume level with the knob position in or out. There have been zero issues with the playability or tuning. 24 frets and the bound ebony fingerboard with real mother of pearl inlays, look and feel absolutely wonderful. Oddly, this one was shipped to me with the strings top wrapped. I didn't notice till after I received it, that it was that way, and even the picture posted on the site showed it strung this optional way. I have learned that's just great and adds to the sustain, utilizing the aluminum stop bar to the fullest. It's set up screwed all the way down, and top wrapping the strings eliminates the steep inclined angle from the bridge to the tailpiece. I'm 100% happy adding this guitar to my collection. It's definitely a player at home or to gig with for me. I named him Dingleberry.

Love my Gibson SG Modern and Sweetwater!

By Daniel Shimasaki on October 3, 2023 Music Background: I’ve been playing guitar for many, many years and should be much better than what I am. I love to play though!

This is THE BEST electric guitar, and guitar, in general, that I've ever owned. From the exterior beauty, of this one of a kind guitar, to it's fast, comfortable neck, this Modern Axe is just incredible!

The weight of this guitar is perfect, with no noticeable "neck dive." The pickups are bright and warm with good contrasts between them.

Sweetwater and my Sweetwater Sales Engineer
Zac Coleman were Superb! Zac was attentive to my needs and I am so appreciative! Outstanding job Zac and Sweetwater!

I LOVE THIS GUITAR and SWEETWATER!

Gibson lived up to it's name

By Aaron Borgens from Fort Collins, CO on August 23, 2023 Music Background: Gigging musician

The guitar I received (2023 SG Modern Blueberry burst) is absolutely perfect! Finish is lovely, frets are smooth, neck feels great and no neck dive. The attention to detail on this one is obvious. Im not sure I love the neck pickup but after adjusting the height a little it is much more pleasing. The coil split sounds are almost more of a tone cut than anything else but overall the tones are really nice. Feels a little heftier than a standard SG because of the real maple cap.
Big shout out to Sweetwater team and especially the service department. I initially bought one that had a wiring issue and they quickly shipped me a new guitar with no fuss! This is the best musical instrument company hands down! I will always (and pretty much always have) buy from these guys before anyone else.

Gibson sg modern

By John from Northern California on August 1, 2023

This Gibson is a great guitar. The feel is hard to explain. I've played several quality guitars but this one has a real professional feel and sound. I think for the price you are getting a real upper end piece. I would recommend it to anybody.

Tuning Stability

By theRealginz from South Florida on June 27, 2023 Music Background: 35 years playing blues, rock, metal and progressive

First of all I have a 2019 SG modern it's absolutely gorgeous. And it plays like a dream, I have changed the bridge position PuP to a Seymour Duncan. I've read many reviews and I myself experienced the problem of tuning instability when I first purchased the instrument, I solved the problem by purchasing/installing a Floyd Rose FRX double locking tremolo system. Since the installation of the Floyd rose, I have experienced none of the prior tuning instability. It was well worth every penny that I paid for it, whether I ever use it as a tremolo or not, which I do, and it performs flawlessly, and the extra added weight of the tremolo seems to have helped to solve the neck dive issue that is common on most SGs (this one included, although not as bad as some other ones that I've played) this guitar is an absolute shredder and I would recommend it for any person who is looking to play any genre of music however, keep in mind it is an SG and you it will suffer from neck dive, and you will have tuning issues, particularly on the G and B strings. I rate this as a five star instrument after the installation of the FRX, Pryor to that it's a solid four and half. The craftsmanship is impeccable and playability is superb.

Absolutely Excellent

By JS from VA on April 17, 2023 Music Background: Lifelong musician

I purchased this without even playing it because it was nice to finally see an SG that wasn't cherry or black. It looks even better in person and the gloss is so shiney it looks wet.

The neck has a nice fat feel to it, which surprised me. My LP Standard has a slimmer neck. But this neck profile fills my hand so well.

The pickups ring clear and the treble has a sharpness to it that cuts through like a razor.

Being small it is barely noticeable and really comfortable.

This is my new favorite in my collection, which has grown quite vast.

Love my axe

By Jason Schneider from Fredericksburg VA, USA on January 20, 2023 Music Background: lifelong musician, guitarist/singer/drummer/saxophonist/producer

This axe is really enjoyable and very playable. I'm replacing my Burstbuckers with a custom nickel plated Seymour Duncan Nazgûl and Sentient set to set its sound apart more from my other two SGs (2020 Standard and 89 Special) and give me something with a ton of bite, but the Burstbuckers that come stock offer great tones and good tonal diversity when you toggle between coil tapped and regular humbucker modes. The plek'd neck is very fast and playable. My only knock on it is that with 10s on the guitar, the frets are big enough that if you have a strong hand used to playing acoustics in addition to electrics as I do, it is easy to push hard enough that you get pitch variability and playing open chords may very well sound out of tune. For me this is a non-issue, since with the Nazgûl and Sentient going in, I figure on keeping the axe tuned down to D standard and putting heavier strings on to counteract that issue. For you, reader, you may want to consider putting a heavier gauge on this guitar even in standard if you find yourself battling the same problem. All in all, I adore this guitar, and its beauty is unmatched - honestly, that's why I bought it: it was too pretty not to have in my arsenal.

If the SG and Les Paul had a baby

By Eric R from TX on December 30, 2022

I'm a huge fan of SGs, and after playing every version Gibson currently offers that's not a custom shop, I found myself drawn to this model over the others. Lots of cool modern features while still feeling and playing like a SG. Definitely recommend if you are looking for something different than the traditional SG, and the maple cap gives off Les Paul vibes (and perhaps tones) as well.

Outstanding Axe

By Gary White from Lees Summit MO (Kansas City area) on September 29, 2022 Music Background: Starting over from being a guitarist and now being a beginner.

I now own this beautiful AA SG. It is amazing that the price on this instrument is still so low! Unlike the other SG's out there it has a solid maple figured top on top of a mahogany base. It also has a 24 fret neck that is constructed of a bound ebony fretboard with mother of pearl inlays. This guitar is a joy to look at and play. I really has a grinding rock tone when necessary but I find it enjoyable for jazz work also. The instrument is extremely well constructed and I know will give me a lifetime of pleasure. Thanks to my Sales Engineer Ben Davis for pointing this guitar out to me. It's light weight also makes playing truly amazing.

My 4th SG

By jmabe from FL on May 24, 2022

I have many guitars but have always favored SG's. I'm not sure there is any such thing as a bad SG, even at the entry level but it's hard to imagine they can get any better than this one. The color is a nice change from the burgundy's and cherry that you see on every street corner. If you don't own or never had an SG, buy this one. You'll forever be a lover like me.

Serious Axe

By Scott DiMatteo from Rantoul Ill on May 1, 2022 Music Background: semi pro

So this is the second guitar I've bought from sweetwater in 10 months. It plays like a dream and is so much more beautiful in person. The neck is slim so it is a fast neck you can shred on.And my salesman Gage Massey always takes care of me when I order from him.He is a super nice guy and always a pleasure to talk too.If your thinking of getting this guitar.Don't delay you will be so happy you did. Also I have experienced no neck dive from it at all.So stop reading and start ordering it.You'll thank me later.

Awesome

By Sweetwater Customer on January 7, 2022 Music Background: Weekend Warrior

Nice guitar with awesome features. I'm usually an LP player but will use this for certain songs for sure. I noticed some neck dive but nothing like some other reviews said, and that's using a standard strap nothing special.

The push pulls do not drop the volume like others I've tried. Fretwork is spot on. The nut is a little sharp on the high e side but all other things considered I'd say this is a win for Gibson.

Great guitar, demo model.

By Tate from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on December 7, 2021 Music Background: Bar gigger with a rock band

Purchased a demo model that was in great shape and perfectly described.

Compound radius neck is excellent.
Thicker down below so you don't get fatigue while chording.
Wider and thinner up top to spread out a bit so your fingers don't trip over each other.

Do not experience any neck dive issues

A little bit heavier than your typical SG because of the maple cap which is actually about 1/2 the body of the guitar.

The bottom mounted jack is great so nothing gets in the way of your swing while doing Pete Townsend windmills.

Big thank to Stephen Oppenheim

A better SG

By Bob Eads from Fort Worth on October 11, 2021 Music Background: retired touring musician

Received the guitar a few days ago (after a 5 month wait), however, it proved to be worth it. It plays great, sounds great and has options that the old SG just does not have. I like the compound radius neck, (I realize that is an individual choice.), it comes plek'd, with hard case, and ready to go. I rates up there with my the Les Studio and Ultra Strat. Also, the option of the push/pull of the single and duel humbucking sound gives it a little more range. I bought the Blueberry Fade, a very beautiful guitar.
Also a shout out to Aaron Kinney for the help and support over the year. Thanks Buddy.

Really great guitar.

By Marty Hansen from Leander, TX on June 6, 2020 Music Background: Church Praise & Worship leader & assist.

I have always favored Les Pauls & Fender Tele's. I never planned on buying a SG, but I saw this modern and thought
seems nice for my collection. WOW, I wish I bought this years ago. It is now my "Go To" and plays really comfortable. I can also get alot of sounds like no other out of it. I doesn't hurt that it is lighter then my LPs and the workmanship and finish is beautiful. If you buy this Modern SG you will not be dissapointed, especially if you buy it from Sweetwater. Setup is perfect!

My new number 1

By Mike from Ohio on May 22, 2020 Music Background: Been playing 30 years.

Plays great and sounds fantastic. Not like the usual SG as far as sound, some where between an SG and LP. I really like the neck, fits my hand nicely. Not to thin but not a baseball bat.It is neck heavy (doesn't bother me)so something to consider. This and a Fender American pro Tele are my main guitars. Couldn't be happier.

Just as sweet as blueberry pie!

By Cliff from New England USA on February 14, 2020

I've owned and played Gibson SG's since the 1970s and every one I sold made me sorry that I sold it. This Gibson SG Modern outshines all but one of my 1960's SG's from the past. The bookmatched curly maple top has greater density than solid mahogany. This combo adds mass and body resonance that cranks up the sustain when this guitar is properly dialed in. I love Gibson's Burstbucker pickups because they perform as well when playing smooth and silky Jazz or raucous and raunchy Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, or the Blues. The asymmetric neck is an ergonomic shoe-in begging the question, "Why didn't they do this 100 years ago?" Another aspect I like is the upper registers to the 24th fret have more access than my SG's from the past. Bravo Gibson! You totally knocked this one out of the park!!

Best guitar I own

By Phil Damasiewicz from Hagerstown, MD on November 10, 2019

I have been playing SGs since the early 1980’s, mostly Standards, and this is the best one I have ever played. The Burstbucker Pros sound so good in this guitar! They ring like a bell through the clean channel of my tubemeister 36, and roar with some gain put on. The assymetrical neck profile feels a little different than the usual slim taper, but I adjusted to it almost immediately. The difference in tone with the coil tap engaged is subtle, but useful. There is no noticeable volume drop when using the coil tap. Gibson really got it right with this one. I play in a classic rock cover band, and the SG modern works well on everything we do, from the Scorpions to the Grateful Dead! My Les Paul’s and SG Standards will be getting some well-deserved rest, as this is now my main gigging guitar. Every feature Gibson added is an upgrade. I love this guitar!

Incredible!

By Aaron from Montana on July 26, 2020 Music Background: Rock/classic metal

Let me just start off by saying that the customer service through Sweetwater is truly amazing! One of the knobs on the guitar was broken and within a few days they had already sent me a new knob. Now onto the guitar. This guitar is incredible! The pickups continue to ring long after you strum it stays in tune like you wouldn't believe and it sounds even better than you'd expect it to. Now the last thing and THE ONLY complaint I have for the guitar is that it is just a tad neck heavy, so if you plan on playing standing with a strap you will have to hold the guitar up to play because it nose dives. Other than that one thing I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Gibson SG Modern

By Tbone from beyond the sun on May 5, 2023 Music Background: Gigging musician

I've had this guitar for a few months now and wanted to wait to get a few gigs behind this before writing this review. First off, Gibson did such a great job with the flawless finish and detail on this guitar. The guitar needed a complete set up on arrival but that is just fine with me as I prefer to do that myself anyway. After using this as my #1 for 3 different gigs, I haven't experienced any neck dive at all using the supplied Gibson leather strap and the chrome strap locks. Tuning stability is rock solid. zero issues, it stays in tune as well as my other 3 Gibsons. Which is to say it's better (by a long shot) than any of my fenders. The ebony fretboard and compound radius neck add so much to this package. Neck is fast, comfortable and the fretboard is so hard, it makes bends effortless and predictable. The modern tone is great and the PU winding give more mid range than a standard PAF. The edge of breakup tone with my orange and fender tube amps are beautiful and addicting. It also has LP snap at a much lighter weight. The only thing I wish it had was a coil split as opposed to a coil tap (push/pull pots). The description says to use the push/pull for single coil tones. You will not get single coil tones out of the SG modern. It will give you a more vintage Gibson paf tone when using the push/pull pots, which is great and adds to the versatility of the axe, but you won't get fender or p90 single coil tones from it. It's a piece of art that's built for rock and roll sonic destruction. If you buy one, expect at least a couple of people every gig telling you how incredible your SG looks and sounds.

Flawed by Tuning Stability

By SoCal Buckeye from Ventura County on February 16, 2023 Music Background: Nearly 30 years pickin & grinnin from blues to multi genres of metal.

Purchased as a Demo from Sweetwater and had high hopes for this. Mind you, I have NEVER had an issue with a demo product from Sweetwater, and a demo model had nothing to do with the tuning stability of this guitar. The black case was a nice change, and the look of this guitar was gorgeous, with half the thickness of the body being maple. The split coil gimmick is a joke though. Gibson, please stop this. If I want single coils I'll play one of my five Fenders. The split humbucker was flat, dull, lifeless. Ebony fingerboard was B-Utiful! 24 frets was badass too. The humbuckers sounded great. Then there's the tuning - this thing would NOT stay in tune. Mind you, I own three Gibsons and sold two others, NONE of them were this bad. I stretched the strings and broke them in plenty. Same problem. Just got fed up with tuning, not playing this guitar. I sent it back for a refund and bought a Mesa Boogie Fillmore 50 head instead- CANNOT go wrong there. So unless you want a wall hanger guitar for looks only, I strongly advise you get hands-on time with this model and see how it drives before you buy. Shout out to Nick Rice for working with me on this - my go-to Sales Engineer, if he's not around, I'll wait to do business with him.

Tuning instability.

By Chris leone from maryland on February 1, 2023 Music Background: 22 years of playing guitar

Beautiful looking instrument, that sounds amazing, and has a quick easy to play neck. But, don't bend the strings! Especially the D and G. I have read, after the fact of purchasing this, that Gibson 3/3 headstock are horrible for tuning stability. But, I can't believe it's this bad on a $ instrument! Maybe it's just mine. A bad nut cut or something. But this instrument is ruined by this. So, unless you are looking for a wall hanger/art piece, I would stay clear and just buy anything else.

Beautiful but not very palyable

By Sweetwater Customer on April 19, 2023

Easily my best looking guitar, but it has playing issues for me. I love Gibson guitars, but this SG does not stay in tune very well and the neck dive is insane. I really wanted to love it, but I honestly do not play it anymore due to the issues.
