Gibson ES-339 Figured Semi-hollowbody Electric Guitar - Sixties Cherry Reviews

Semi-hollowbody Electric Guitar with Figured Maple and Poplar Body, Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fingerboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Sixties Cherry

The Gibson ES-339 is loved by players who need semi-hollow tone but don't want a guitar with too much bulk. Built as a smaller version of the ES-335, the ES-339 has the same semi-hollow tone and sustain in a smaller package. Made with a 3-ply maple and poplar laminate body, this guitar showcases a bright and lively sound with a warm, rich sustain. A mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard feel familiar in your hand and enable quick soloing and chording. Powered by a pair of '57 Classic humbuckers, this guitar has all the PAF goodness you'd expect from a vintage Gibson, but with added clarity and bite. So what are you waiting for? Check out the Gibson ES-339 at Sweetwater today.

Beautiful Guitar

By Robert Malone from Arnold, MD on March 8, 2024 Music Background: Playing since 1964

For some years, the only guitar missing from my iconic Fender and Gibson Collection, was a Gibson Semi-hollow.
I had been holding off because of the high price. But then the other day I figured, you only live once, so I bit the bullet and bought it. It arrived intact, thanks to Sweetwater's awesome shipping department, making it impervious to the rough handling of Fed X.
This guitar is simply beautiful, plays and sounds like a dream. The setup right out of the box was perfect. Perfect intonation, neck relief was on the money, and the only thing I did was lower the string action, just a hair. The guitar feels light and comfortable, and the fretboard is very silky smooth. The 57 pickups sound very different than the Burstbucker 61's on my Les Paul Standard 60's. Not as biting, very warm and articulate.....exactly what I was hoping for. I play clean, no pedals, through a Twin Reverb. For right now, and maybe it's just the newness, but I'd say this is best sounding guitar I own. The price was high, but I feel like I got what I paid for. And now my collection is complete :)

Thank you to Chris Finton and the rest of the awesome Sweetwater Team. Sweetwater's customer service is simply outstanding.

Beautiful guitar.

This guitar plays and sounds great. Extremely well made. Domenic was very helpful and professional, and I am very pleased with this purchase. I have been dealing with Sweetwater for many years and will definitely continue.

Feels like a custom shop guitar

By Mark Scrivener from San Jose, CA on May 17, 2023 Music Background: working musician, guitar teacher, producer

I own a few Gibson custom shop guitars and a few vintage Gibson's from the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Much to my surprise this guitar is every bit as nice as my custom shop guitars, and even better than some of my vintage guitars. Give it a CS serial number, throw a COA in the case and no one would doubt it came from the custom shop. Fit and finish is excellent. Tuning stability is unreal, feels great, plays great, sounds great, looks great, love it.

One minor caution regarding the 339 design vs the 335, reaching the last few frets is a bit awkward due to the reduced size of the lower cutout. This isn't a problem on the 335 and you don't really realize how much smaller the 339 cutout is until you go past the 19th fret. Not a big deal to me, and I'd much rather have the smaller, more comfortable body shape of the 339, but YMMV.

Gibson ES339

By TP from Atlanta on October 5, 2022 Music Background: I have played guitar for over 45 years.

I ordered this guitar last fall. Given the world supply chain issues even though Gibson manufactures their guitars in Tennessee, it took longer than any guitar that I had previously ordered. JP originally placed my order and then, Rafael handled it from there. I live in in the Southeast and have plenty of Guitar Centers near me. I have done business with both Sweetwater and Guitar Center for many years. However, the attention to detail, the extraordinary skills and musical acumen that the sales staff at Sweetwater possesses is unmatched. So, thank you Sweetwater and of course the kindness and special attention that Rafael expressed with me during the entire process.

With with respect to my GIBSON ES 339, I was honestly expecting to be a bit disappointed given the so-called challenges that Gibson Guitars was known for over the past few years. However, this guitar not only arrived is perfect condition but to my complete surprise it plays like a dream. I prefer my action to be low and after playing it, I could not believe that it did not need a set up. All of this feels very much like a great dream. So, It's relatively light, not too lite which enables it to have better tone when playing with extra gain, the clean channels on my Mesa Triple Crown sound pristine and infinitely cleaner and warmer than many other amps and the size of the guitar is absolutely perfect. I would say that it represents a cross between an acoustic guitar and a Les Paul but with dual cutaways as well as any guitar could. I hope that I get to keep this guitar for the rest of my life.

In conclusion, if you are a tall and larger frame person then, perhaps, the GIBSON ES 335 is a good choice for you however, as far as I am concerned, this guitars lacks absolutely nothing, is slim but impactful and could ultimately be a perfect choice for someone that can only afford a single high quality guitar. Also, I love the fact that the quarter inch cable connector is located at the bottom of the guitar between the two bindings versus on the top of the body. As far as the Cherry Flametop, it's breathtaking. Try finding a PRS Core 594 for under $5500 with this type of fit and finish. Well, I think that you get the point.

Thank you Sweeter team!

Amazing quality!

By Ron Adams from INDIANAPOLIS, IN on February 25, 2022 Music Background: Hobby/ campfire/ small gigs guitarist

I had a 339 Vintage Burst made in 2012 that I bought new in 2014 from a Gibson Dealer. I loved the guitar and planned on keeping it for life, but my guitar guy found a problem with the truss rod and suggested I send it in to Gibson for service. After checking it out, they determined that they wanted to send me a replacement. They no longer offer the vintage burst finish, so I was in love with the figured maple finish on the website, but it is an upgrade from my standard 339. After mulling it over a while, they decided to replace my Vintage burst with the Cherry Figured Maple guitar with the hand wired electronics. I was sad to lose my burst, but excited to get the upgrade. I have been in love with this guitar since I got it last April. It needed additional setup from the factory, but it has awesome low action, feels smooth as silk, has incredible tones, and the look and finish is amazing. Gibson has upped their game in every regard compared to the 2012 model I had before. I couldn't be happier with the guitar and the warranty service Gibson provided once the problem was identified!

Amazing Guitar

By B on April 25, 2021

I just received this guitar as a gift. Ordered and setup from Sweetwater. The ES 339 has been my dream guitar and I have the Epiphone version which is a great guitar too, but this Gibson is one of the best guitars I have ever played. The fit and finish are top notch, and the sound is everything that I thought the Epiphone was lacking. The bridge pickup is bright and focused without being harsh and the neck pickup is full and fat without being mushy. The figured finish is absolutely beautiful. On top of that, Sweetwater did an amazing job on the setup.
