The Iconic Workhorse Rock Guitar

The Gibson SG is already a rock icon, but Gibson has upped the ante with the SG Modern. This guitar’s bevy of cutting-edge enhancements includes an eye-popping AA figured maple top, a Graph Tech nut, rock-solid Grover tuners, and push-pull coil tapping. Take hold of the speedy 24-fret SlimTaper neck topped with a bound ebony fretboard, and let ’er rip with a lick or two. Feel the power generated by two split-coil Burstbucker Pro humbuckers. The Gibson SG Modern is way more than an update of a classic solidbody electric — it’s everything a modern rocker could want in a guitar.

A lean, mean tone machine

The Gibson SG, famous for its comfortable, fast-action neck, is a perennial favorite among guitarists at Sweetwater. Whether you’re chording down low or soloing up high, the distinctive SlimTaper neck carve always feels just right. The guitar’s iconic double-horned cutaway gives you free access to the high registers, while its bound, Plek’d fretboard ensures effortless playability. The Gibson SG Modern is a lean, mean tone machine.

Matched Burstbucker Pro pickup set and high-performance switching

Burstbucker Pro pickups deliver the vintage flavor of Gibson’s popular Burstbuckers, enhanced with the addition of Alnico V magnets. Fat and meaty, with gobs of drive and attack, the Burstbucker Pro serves up a sweet harmonic complexity and bell-like clarity courtesy of slightly unmatched bobbin windings. It’s the classic Gibson PAF tone — with extra attitude. Routed through electronics featuring two push-pull volume controls for access to coil-tapped single-coil tones, the Gibson SG Modern gives you the tonal mastery to ace any gig or recording session.

Love my axe
This axe is really enjoyable and very playable. I'm replacing my Burstbuckers with a custom nickel plated Seymour Duncan Nazgûl and Sentient set to set its sound apart more from my other two SGs (2020 Standard and 89 Special) and give me something with a ton of bite, but the Burstbuckers that come stock offer great tones and good tonal diversity when you toggle between coil tapped and regular humbucker modes. The plek'd neck is very fast and playable. My only knock on it is that with 10s on the guitar, the frets are big enough that if you have a strong hand used to playing acoustics in addition to electrics as I do, it is easy to push hard enough that you get pitch variability and playing open chords may very well sound out of tune. For me this is a non-issue, since with the Nazgûl and Sentient going in, I figure on keeping the axe tuned down to D standard and putting heavier strings on to counteract that issue. For you, reader, you may want to consider putting a heavier gauge on this guitar even in standard if you find yourself battling the same problem. All in all, I adore this guitar, and its beauty is unmatched - honestly, that's why I bought it: it was too pretty not to have in my arsenal.

Incredible!
Let me just start off by saying that the customer service through Sweetwater is truly amazing! One of the knobs on the guitar was broken and within a few days they had already sent me a new knob. Now onto the guitar. This guitar is incredible! The pickups continue to ring long after you strum it stays in tune like you wouldn't believe and it sounds even better than you'd expect it to. Now the last thing and THE ONLY complaint I have for the guitar is that it is just a tad neck heavy, so if you plan on playing standing with a strap you will have to hold the guitar up to play because it nose dives. Other than that one thing I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Gibson SG Modern
I've had this guitar for a few months now and wanted to wait to get a few gigs behind this before writing this review. First off, Gibson did such a great job with the flawless finish and detail on this guitar. The guitar needed a complete set up on arrival but that is just fine with me as I prefer to do that myself anyway. After using this as my #1 for 3 different gigs, I haven't experienced any neck dive at all using the supplied Gibson leather strap and the chrome strap locks. Tuning stability is rock solid. zero issues, it stays in tune as well as my other 3 Gibsons. Which is to say it's better (by a long shot) than any of my fenders. The ebony fretboard and compound radius neck add so much to this package. Neck is fast, comfortable and the fretboard is so hard, it makes bends effortless and predictable. The modern tone is great and the PU winding give more mid range than a standard PAF. The edge of breakup tone with my orange and fender tube amps are beautiful and addicting. It also has LP snap at a much lighter weight. The only thing I wish it had was a coil split as opposed to a coil tap (push/pull pots). The description says to use the push/pull for single coil tones. You will not get single coil tones out of the SG modern. It will give you a more vintage Gibson paf tone when using the push/pull pots, which is great and adds to the versatility of the axe, but you won't get fender or p90 single coil tones from it. It's a piece of art that's built for rock and roll sonic destruction. If you buy one, expect at least a couple of people every gig telling you how incredible your SG looks and sounds.

Beautiful guitar, but I had the standard Seymour Duncan pickups put in.
The color is beautiful nitrocellulose veneer, just like a Heritage Cherry SG. But the "modern "Burstbuckers" sound as though the pickups are in permanent "Angus Young" mode, so I had Sweetwater remove them and put in the upgraded Seymour Duncan humbuckers that allow a standard SG to be versatile enough to play classic Rock and Blues. These "Burstbuckers" can only sound like Angus Young, so I guess the "SG Moderns" were set up for a younger generation of players who don't know that the standard humbuckers were what defined the sound of classic Rock, such as Clapton's SG, which he played in Cream, during the late 1960s. I also had Sweetwater install a real bone nut, which greatly increases the clarity and resonance of the guitar. It's unfortunate that Gibson does not offer a model in this color, that has the upgraded Seymour Duncan humbuckers.
Music background: I was in a band during the late 1960s.o

From rockers to jazz cats, there are generations of guitarists right here at Sweetwater who swear by Gibson guitars. Not only do they make many of the most iconic solidbody electric guitars of all time - the Les Paul, the SG, the Flying V - but they also produce classic hollowbody and semi-hollowbody models and some of the most iconic acoustic guitars on the planet. We play them all! Our close relationship with Gibson often allows us to stock exclusive models and rare finds, and we're always happy to turn players and collectors on to the gems in the Sweetwater Guitar Gallery. We also have access to all the latest Gibson hardware, and the Sweetwater Guitar Repair Shop has upgraded countless guitars with their top-of-the-line humbuckers, classic P-90s, and more.
