The EVH Story

In 1978, the world of hard rock was changed forever. Displaying dazzling technique, Eddie Van Halen not only revolutionized guitar playing, his unorthodox approach to guitar design inspired an entire generation of "Superstrat" guitars with humbuckers and Floyd Rose vibrato systems. On top of that, his trademark "brown sound" led to countless guitarists modifying their amps, attempting to capture EVH's iconic tone.

"Frankenstein" AKA "The Frankenstrat"

There are very few guitars out there that have been modded as much as Eddie Van Halen's favorite six-string sidekick, lovingly known as "Frankenstein." Eddie started with an ash Stratocaster body, added a maple neck, crudely mounted bridge PAF humbucker, and eventually a Floyd Rose vibrato system (with a 1971 quarter as a bridge stop). Other unconventional modifications included a non-functioning neck pickup and 3-way switch in the middle pickup position, a strip of double-sided masking tape for holding picks, large screw eyes in lieu of strap buttons, and a distinctive black and white (and later red, black, and white) paint job with bicycle reflectors.

Voltage-starved Marshall

Eddie's eccentric approach to music wasn't limited to guitar design. He was also lauded for his unique high-gain tone. He started with a stock late-'60s 100-watt Marshall head that was biased hot enough to melt its EL34 power tubes, lowered its transformer voltage to 90V, cranked every knob to the max, then ran it through a 4 x 12 cabinet. While not very scientific, Eddie's rig created ringing harmonics, brilliant top end, and a massive crunch that was coveted by guitarists everywhere.

Eddie Teams Up with Fender

In 2001, Eddie joined forces with Fender and launched his own brand: EVH. Along with an accurate reproduction of "Frankenstein," EVH has produced highly successful guitars, amps, and other gear. EVH Wolfgang guitars are built to Eddie's exacting standards (he reportedly physically signs each prototype when he's approved it), and feature custom-made pickups, graphite-reinforced necks, Floyd Rose vibrato systems, and more. EVH 5150 III amps and cabinets deliver everything from clean to crunch to full-out distortion, all imbued with Eddie's signature tone. EVH Striped Series guitars are inspired by the various axes that Eddie has played throughout his career (including both colors of "Frankenstein," "Bumblebee," and "Circles/See Ya"), complete with famous graphics.
