Synching ADAT and Pro Tools
A common question lately: Can you control an ADAT (or other multitrack) directly from Pro Tools. If the machine can conform to machine control standards you can use the machine control option in Pro Tools to control it. The machine will behave as if it is slaved to Pro Tools. Pro Tools does not support MMC (MIDI Machine Control) so for something like ADAT recorders you are better off using a BRC as a remote control for the ADAT’s and Pro Tools, while using the Digidesign USD as the synchronizer. The set up is as follows: USD slave clock out to your interface slave in (888|24 or ADAT Bridge). Set the BRC to external sync. BRC SMPTE out to the USD LTC in and make sure gen sync on the BRC is set to SMPTE. Set Pro Tools to internal sync and put it on line. According to Digidesign, this setup is the most consistent and is accurate up to one sample resolution.
