Midas M32: Firmware Update

In this article, we will show you how to update the firmware on your Midas M32.

The Midas M32 series of mixers and the Behringer X32 line are produced by the same company, Music Tribe. Throughout the years these lines have been on the market, Music Tribe has frequently released new versions of the mixer’s operating system, or firmware. These firmware updates fix bugs and sometimes add new features. Midas recommends that users always update their M32 to the newest firmware version as it is released.

We will show you how to determine whether you need an update and how to apply it. Let’s get started.

  1. Overview of the Update Process
  2. Do You Need to Update?
  3. Performing the Update Step-by-step

Overview of the Update Process

To perform the update, you will need two USB thumb drives.

Connect the first thumb drive to your Midas M32 and use it to make a backup of all your console settings and scenes. You can use the backup to restore all your data in case data is lost during the firmware update.

The second thumb drive is to install the firmware update.

On your computer, go to the Midas website and download the updater. Then you connect the second thumb drive to your computer and copy the updater files to it.

You then plug the updater thumb drive into the Midas M32 and start the update process.

When the update is completed, you can connect your backup thumb drive to your Midas M32 and restore your data if needed.

Here are the detailed instructions.

Do You Need to Update?

How to Find the Version Number of the Firmware on Your Midas M32

  1. Press Setup and go to the Global tab.
  2. Check the firmware version number. Make a note of it.

How to Find the Version Number of the Newest Firmware from Midas

  1. Go to the Midas M32 product page.
  2. In the pane on the right, under Product Library, click to expand the Software section.
  3. Look for the M32 Live Firmware Version. Compare your unit’s firmware number to that of the installer on the website.

If the version number on the website is higher than the one on your unit, you can perform the update.

Format Your Thumb Drives

IMPORTANT: Formatting a thumb drive will erase all data on it, so first check the drive on your computer to make sure it does not contain any important data.

First, you need two USB drives formatted for FAT32.

If you’re not sure how to format a thumb drive, here are our Sweetwater guides:

Back Up Your Data

IMPORTANT: Firmware updates may erase all board settings saved on the M32. This includes routing, Showfiles, scenes, snippets, and other presets. Back up all your data to a USB thumb drive before proceeding.

Use one of the two thumb drives as a backup drive.

Learn more about saving settings to a USB drive in the M32R User Manual’s section 2.8 Scenes, under the Utility functions for each section.

Remove the backup thumb drive from your M32 and set it aside.

Prepare the Updater on Your Computer

  1. Connect the second thumb drive to your computer.
  2. Download the new console firmware from the M32 product page.
  3. In your downloads folder, in the extracted firmware folder, locate the file whose name begins with dcp_ and ends with .update.
  4. Drag and copy this file to the root directory of your newly formatted thumb drive.
  5. In the Finder on macOS, or the File Explorer in Windows, perform the Eject operation on the thumb drive. When the OS has ejected the volume, unplug it.

Perform the Update on the Midas M32

Midas provides this instructional video:

Midas M32 Quick Tips: Upgrading Firmware

Method One

  1. Plug the updater thumb drive into the top panel USB connector while the console is turned off.
  2. Hold the View button down while switching the console on. While booting, the M32 will run a fully automatic firmware update, which will take 2–3 minutes longer than the regular boot sequence.

Method Two

  1. While the console is powered on, connect the update thumb drive to your M32.
  2. Open Setup – Global on the console and select Update FW in the lower-left corner.

After the firmware update is complete, you can remove the updater thumb drive, insert the backup thumb drive, and follow the instructions in the User Manual to restore your Showfiles and settings from the backup.

When no update file is available on the USB drive, or when it is corrupted, the update mode will remain active, preventing the M32 from booting regularly. Switch the console off and back on without holding the USB View button to boot the console with the existing firmware.
