An error prompt now informs me upon attempting to run Kontakt that the item can’t be opened because the original item is in the trash. Do I have to install each successive upgrade in order to get to the latest version?
It is not a problem with updating incorrectly. You are probably double clicking an a alias of an older Kontakt application file which is now in the trash obviously. Please locate the correct Kontakt 1.2 application file and create a new alias of it on your desktop or wherever you want it. Double click this alias and Kontakt 1.2 will start.
