How to Set Up a DAW Controller in Cubase
DAW controllers (control surfaces) must be configured inside Cubase before they can control it. That means you must select the controller’s protocol in the MIDI settings. If you’re unsure how to change your MIDI device’s protocol (mode), check its user’s manual for more information.
Cubase auto-detects and will auto-enable your DAW controller if you have installed its latest driver. However, verifying that it is enabled and configured correctly is good practice.
If you are setting up a DAW controller for the first time, we recommend reading Getting Started with DAW Controllers first, then following the instructions below.
- Open the Studio menu and select Studio Setup….
- Select the MIDI Port Setup sub-menu and activate your MIDI device’s IN and OUT ports.
- Click the + button (top left) and select your device’s controller identity or protocol.
- Click the MIDI Input and Output drop-down menus and select your device’s ports.
- Click Apply,followed by OK.

MIDI Remote Integration
Cubase has a MIDI Remote Integration feature that allows you to customize the mapping for your DAW controller. While the factory controls are certainly handy, customizing the mapping to suit your needs can speed up your workflow, particularly if you use a MIDI keyboard with DAW control features.
