Audio transferred digitally into the Mac plays back brighter in Sound Designer II than on DAT. (emphasis)

DAT was probably recorded with the “emphasis” flag enabled. Current Digidesign systems do not support the “emphasis” option, so the audio will sound brighter in SDII, Pro Tools, etc. The workarounds would be:1) Do an analog transfer from DAT to Mac.2) Do a digital transfer (knowing that the audio will be brighter while editing), then use a digi interface that can enable emphasis (the DAT I/O had a front panel switch to enable/disable emphasis in the outgoing digital stream). It might also be possible to use DSI 2.9 (which inadvertantly enabled emphasis) to accomplish this with an interface other than the DAT I/O.
