Portable DAT recorders were pretty cool, but the technology is getting more than a bit long in the tooth. If you need a portable device that can record audio in the field, the studio or wherever, odds are good you are considering other options. Roland’s answer is the CD-2, which can not only record audio, but also edit it and even burn it onto a CD for you!
The CD-2 records directly onto CompactFlash media (up to 2GB capacity) for hours of recording time. Once recorded, audio can be edited, processed, and burned to CD. There’s also an option for burning audio directly to CDs in real time, which is great, particularly given the low cost of recordable CDs these days. There’s even a stereo microphone built into the CD-2 for fast capture – just point and shoot. Naturally, external mics can be plugged in via the CD-2’s two XLR inputs, complete with phantom power. RCA inputs and outputs are provided and 1/4-inch inputs allow instruments to be directly connected as well.
The CD-2’s includes built-in stereo speakers, speed/pitch control, tuner, and metronome. Audio can be recorded, then played back at a slower tempo while retaining the original pitch. Or pitch of the audio can be changed for play-along practice in different key signatures. Audio effects, such as reverb, EQ, and compression are built-in. Special tools are also provided for guitar and vocals, and the onboard Mastering effects help put the final polish on the mix before burning to CD.
