Whether you’re looking or listening, multiple monitors can be a good thing in the recording studio!
From a visual standpoint, having more than one monitor (display) allows you to have multiple windows open and to distribute the various components of a session out and view them simultaneously. Many engineers like to put the mixer in one window and the audio/MIDI editor in another, or to reserve one monitor for plug-in windows.
From an sonic standpoint, having multiple sets of monitors allows you to reference your tracks and mixes from sources that give you a broad picture of the sound quality, blends, and levels. Many engineers like to have a larger, main set of monitors for full-range, uncolored listening, then supplement this with a smaller, more “consumer” pair of speakers for getting a real-world impression of the sound.
