Q: I was checking out the Waves H-Comp and H-Delay on Sweetwater.com, and it says that they’re “hybrid” plug-ins. What does that mean?
A: Waves took a unique approach with these plug-ins. The background is that, when many companies (including Waves) have created modeled processors in the past, they’ve been painstakingly faithful to the feature set and sound of the original hardware units being modeled. But with the first two plug-ins in the new Hybrid line, H-Comp and H-Delay, Waves removed the limitation from the equation — they began by faithfully modeling vintage gear, but then let their imaginations run wild, adding new features that are only available in the virtual world. A very basic example is that the H-Delay, which was modeled on an analog delay, has an added tap tempo feature (not available on most hardware units). A wide range of other advanced features were also added to each plug-in.
So, the idea is that the plug-ins began life as modeled analog processors, but then they were extended with modern, state-of-the-art digital features. The combination of vintage sound and modern control is hard to beat!
