Should I Upgrade to macOS Tahoe?

Should I Upgrade to macOS Tahoe?

Autumn has arrived. That means it’s time for folks looking forward to holidays with family — and also time for Apple to release their latest operating system for the Mac. The latest macOS Tahoe 26 was released on September 15, 2025.

Tahoe’s productivity enhancements, Apple Intelligence, and ever-improving integration with iPhone and iPad are exciting for Mac fans everywhere. But for Mac-oriented musicians and composers, pro audio engineers, and content creators, there are unanswered questions: Should I wait to upgrade? How do I decide when is the right time to install macOS Tahoe?

This is something that Mac-centric musicians go through every year. Experience has taught us that a major upgrade to any operating system almost always results in incompatibilities with the current versions of music and audio software and hardware. The manufacturers and developers who make your digital audio workstation (DAW) software, plug-ins, audio interface, and MIDI hardware are once again hard at work testing their products with the new macOS Tahoe. In the coming weeks and months, they will release updates to provide compatibility.

The right time for you to upgrade to macOS Tahoe 26 is when you determine that the manufacturers of each component of your workflow — software and hardware — have supplied updates that you can install to ensure compatibility. Until then, it’s best to be patient and wait.

At Sweetwater, we’ve been Mac experts for decades. That’s why every year we provide resources to help you decide when it’s safe to install the newest macOS.

Is macOS Tahoe 26 an Update or an Upgrade?

The operating system, or OS, is the environment in which all your apps run and through which your audio, video, and MIDI hardware connect. Because of that, audio and video software and hardware have deep hooks within the OS to get to the processor chip, memory, and disk storage.

macOS Tahoe 26 is a major upgrade from the previous version of macOS you are already using. Changes in the OS may cause incompatibility with the software and hardware you currently use.

On the other hand, with a point update — such as last year’s macOS Sequoia 15.6 to 15.7 — the changes usually aren’t drastic. Installing an update to macOS is designed to fix bugs and add improvements to the system you’re already relying on. As such, it is usually safe to perform point updates on your OS.

Let’s discuss the factors you need to consider.

Tahoe on a Mac with Apple silicon vs. Tahoe on an Intel-based Mac

In 2023, Apple phased out the last of the previous generation of Mac computers with an Intel CPU. The current generation of Mac, introduced in 2020, uses the Apple silicon chip (M1, M2, M3, M4). Audio engineers at Sweetwater continue to be amazed at the gains in system performance and audio processing power in each new iteration of Mac with Apple silicon.

There are only a handful of Intel-based Mac computers released in 2019 and 2020 that can be upgraded to macOS Tahoe, and they will not be able to use the features that require Apple Intelligence. If you are still working with an Intel-based Mac, then it’s time to consider buying a new Apple Mac desktop or Apple MacBook computer.

If you buy a new Mac that arrives with the previous macOS 15 Sequoia installed, then resist the urge to upgrade to Tahoe right away. You need to wait for manufacturer-announced compatibility with your hardware and software.

Software & Hardware Compatibility with macOS Tahoe 26

Every year when Apple releases a new macOS, hardware manufacturers and software developers need weeks or even months to provide updates to their products to ensure compatibility.

How can you find out when the updates you need are available?

Sweetwater provides the SweetCare “macOS Tahoe 26 Compatibility Guide” with direct links to the latest information on the support pages of 215 manufacturers and software developers. Check our guide to look up the hardware and software that you use. Bookmark the page and check back often. We’ll be updating it throughout the coming year.

Our guide also provides information about whether a manufacturer’s apps are Apple silicon native. Tahoe compatibility aside, over the last few years developers have released new versions of their apps compiled for the Apple silicon chip to take full advantage of the new platform’s digital signal processing power. Some older apps with Intel-based code may run acceptably on a Mac with Apple silicon under Rosetta 2 emulation.

Is My Mac a macOS Tahoe–supported Device?

Any Mac with Apple silicon, with an M1 chip or higher, can run macOS Tahoe 26 and make use of Apple Intelligence.

Only four models of Intel-based Mac from 2019 and 2020 can run Tahoe, but the Apple Intelligence features will not be available on these machines.

New Features in macOS Tahoe 26

So, what can you look forward to when you’re sure the time is right? Tahoe promises a solid upgrade with new features for everyday productivity. Here are the highlights:

Liquid Glass

Liquid Glass is a whole new design for the Mac user interface that extends across macOS Tahoe 26, iOS 26, iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26. Icons are redesigned while menus, buttons, and navigational elements are more intuitive and have new behaviors. There are more ways to customize controls.

Apple Intelligence (AI)

Apple Intelligence was the big news in 2024 with macOS Sequoia. With Tahoe, Apple Intelligence provides more tools and integration with more apps and functions. There’s a new Live Translation feature for communicating with people in other languages. The Shortcuts app offers new, more powerful actions.

Spotlight

Spotlight in macOS Tahoe has received a huge upgrade. It does a lot more than search for files. Now, right from the Spotlight search bar, you can execute hundreds of actions with automated scripts created via Shortcuts, Apple Intelligence integration, and more.

Continuity

Sequoia let you control your iPhone from your Mac with iPhone Mirroring. Tahoe goes further with the new Phone app for Mac, letting you make and answer calls on your Mac that are routed through your phone. Live Activities from your iPhone will now appear on your Mac, and there’s a new Call Screening feature.

Learn about these and more features on Apple’s macOS Tahoe page.

A new macOS is always a major event, and macOS Tahoe is going to be great. But instead of asking, “Should I upgrade?” the real question is “When should I upgrade?”

Be deliberate and have a plan before you move forward. We’re here to help.

Before you upgrade, it’s essential (really essential!) that you make a complete backup of your system to an external hard drive. If you’re not sure how, then go and immediately check out our “macOS Time Machine Backup Guide.” Once you have a complete backup, if there’s a problem or a compatibility issue, then you can use the backup to restore your system to the way it was before. And you can continue to use Time Machine to back up your data every day. It’s your best insurance against losing work.

You’ll also find our “macOS Tahoe 26 Download and Install Guide” — once you’re ready. It’s also got instructions on changing your System Settings to prevent your system from automatically installing Tahoe if you’re not ready.

Check out our “macOS Tahoe 26 Audio Optimization Guide” for trouble-free recording and editing and methods of getting the best performance from your system.

We hope you won’t need it, but we also provide our “macOS Tahoe 26 Operating System Downgrade Guide.” If you install Tahoe and things aren’t working out, then it’s usually possible for you to wipe your system, reinstall a previous version of macOS, and restore all your data from that crucial Time Machine backup, so you can get back to work making music with minimal time lost.
