How to Choose a Korg Tuner

How to Choose a Korg Tuner

If you’re searching for a tuner, you’ll find what you need among the many tuner offerings from Korg. They’ve been building electronic tuners for over 40 years and still lead the industry by innovative design of compact affordable tuners. In fact, they were the first company to offer a tuner with a needle-type meter.

Korg tuners are known for their diverse, easy-to-read displays and speedy, precise performance. From their classic handheld models to their popular Pitchblack series to their top-of-the-line Custom Shop series models, Korg makes a tuner that will fit your needs, no matter what instrument you play.

Handheld Tuners

Since the ’70s, musicians from all walks of life have relied on handheld tuners. The Korg GA-1 is tailor-made for guitarists and bass players who are looking for a pocket-sized tuner. The GA-1 allows you to tune 1-5 semitones flat, supports 7-string guitar tunings, and is loaded with an internal speaker for producing reference tones. Korg’s TM-50 model includes a metronome for improving your timing.

The Korg CA-1 is popular with brass and orchestral musicians, by virtue of its adjustable calibration, wide range of pitch detection, and helpful reference tones. The CA-40 offers an extended pitch-detection range, output jack, and other enhanced features. Both of these handheld tuners, as well as the GA-1 and TM-50, employ a high-precision LCD needle-type meter for stable tuning.

The mother of all Korg handheld tuners is the OT-120. This tuner utilizes a highly accurate analog needle-type meter. The OT-120 provides you with multiple scales, an enormous detection range that accommodates most orchestral instruments, multiple temperaments to support historic tunings, and a transpose mode that’s tailored toward wind instruments. While it may be a bit intimidating to your average Joe, the OT-120 has nearly every feature a classical orchestral musician could want.

Clip-on Tuners

The built-in mics on handheld tuners are great when you’re in a quiet space, but not so great in loud places. Unless you enjoy unplugging your guitar from your amp and plugging it into your tuner (then unplugging it from the tuner and plugging it back into your amp) every time you drift out of tune, a handheld tuner won’t cut it.

Luckily, in the mid-’90s, clip-on tuners emerged. These tuners attach to your instrument’s headstock via a spring-loaded clip and employ a built-in transducer to sense its pitch. Korg’s GripTune is a great cost-effective clip-on tuner for guitar and bass. It’s low profile, lightweight, and accurate. Stepping up to the Sledgehammer model gives you an easy-to-read, full-color LCD screen and other enhanced features. Classical musicians love Korg’s Dolcetto series, which is specially designed for orchestral instruments. With separate models for violin/viola and other instruments, Dolcetto series tuners include a metronome and convenient features that are ideal for orchestral musicians.

Soundhole Tuners

For acoustic guitarists, soundhole tuners offer the ultimate in discrete placement. These devices are placed inside your guitar’s body, invisible to everybody but you. The Korg Rimpitch fits a variety of 6-string acoustic guitars with round soundholes and attaches directly within your natural line of sight. The Rimpitch’s hook design with protective rubber keeps it from falling out of your instrument.

Pitchblack Series

If you’re a guitarist with a pedalboard, you’ll love Korg’s Pitchblack series. Made to fit conveniently among your stompboxes, these pedal-sized tuners are durable enough to withstand the rigors of the road. The original Pitchblack features four display modes and large, bright LED meters that are easy to read on a dark stage. The Pitchblack mini is a scaled-down version of the original, great for guitarists who value their pedalboard real estate. Both of these tuners are true bypass, so they won’t color your guitar’s tone.

Custom Shop Series

For those who expect more from their tuner, Korg has created the Custom Shop series. These tuners are enhanced versions of GA, Sledgehammer, and Pitchblack models with ultra-bright 3D visual meters and high-precision tuning.
