In this video I am playing a DW Collector’s Series 6-piece drum kit with the Finish Ply, Broken Glass. This is gorgeous drum kit right from DW’s top of the line Collector’s Series. DW does not spare any expense when making these custom drums and you can easily see and hear that. These drums are a lot of fun to play. Let’s get into the great features this DW Collectors Series kit has to offer.
Beautiful Hand Crafted Drum Shells
The shells feature North American Hard Rock Maple and African Mahogany construction, combined with VLT (Vertical Low Timbre) shell technology. The result of that are very musical sounding drums. They have great projection with a warm tone that will work wonderfully in the studio or live. I easily got distinct pitches in each tom making for a nice high to low run.
The drums sizes are 8″ x 10″ and 9″ x 12″ for the rack toms, 12″ x 14″ and 14″ x 16″ for the floor toms, a 6″ x 14″ snare, and an 18″ x 22″ kick drum. All of the toms are 9-ply, the kick drum is 10-ply, and the snare is 12-ply. All of the drums have perfect 45-degree bearing edges and the drum heads sit perfectly on the shell. Tuning these drums is a breeze; in fact, it was fun hearing them at different pitches. I experimented both high and low for all of the drums and they reacted beautifully where ever I took them.
Great Hardware
As always, the hardware on these DW drums is top shelf. DW’s patented STM (suspension tom mount) system really allows the drums to resonate naturally making for that great tone. The MAG throw off and three-position butt plate on the snare drum is one of the best snare strainer systems made. You can really dial in just the amount of snare buzz that you desire, and if you want a little more or a little less you just need to change the lever on the three-position butt plate. Steel Triple Flange True Hoops along with DW’s True-Pitch Tuning Rods bring even more tone capabilities to these drums.
Looks are important
Finish Ply is the wrap that goes on the outside of the drum shell and DW has a huge variety of looks and colors. The Broken Glass Finish Ply on this kit is beautiful and very sparkly. The contrast of the chrome lugs and the champagne color of the sparkles looks amazing under lights. I can easily imagine this drum kit on a big stage under a big lighting rig. It would stand out from way in the back of an arena as well as in any small club or church stage.
This DW Collector’s Series 6-piece kit looks and sounds great. They will work well in any musical situation weather it be live or in the recording studio. You can go wrong with this drum kit.
