Q: When I bend a string on my guitar, which has a vibrato bridge, the other strings go flat. Is there anything I can do about this?
A: This is simply the way in which vibratos such as those made by Fender and Floyd Rose work. If you want the bridge to truly “float” — set so that you can both raise and lower the pitch — then it is difficult to prevent this problem.
If you are willing to set up the guitar so the bridge can only drop the pitch of the strings — by pulling the bridge back hard against the guitar body by adjusting the vibrato claw and springs — then the problem should be solved.
In some cases changing with the number of tremolo springs and the string gauges you are using, as well as adjusting the angle the bridge sits at, can help with the amount the pitch drops when you bend a string, but it will not solve the problem completely.
