1/8-inch and Balanced Gear

Q: I want to run my iPad into balanced XLR inputs on my video camera. Can I just use an adapter or do I need something else?

A: You may be able to get by with a simple adapter in some cases; it depends on the gear you are using. However, for best results, we recommend a direct box. We like the Whirlwind pcDI, which can accept 1/4-inch, stereo 1/8-inch, or RCA inputs and has outputs on XLR connectors. Ground lifts for preventing hum and buzz are included, as are 20dB pads for hot signals.
