Whirlwind PodDI 1-channel Passive iPod / iPhone Direct Box Reviews
If you run live sound, then here's a handy tool you'll want to keep in your bag of tricks. The Whirlwind podDI is a passive direct box that's purpose built for patching iPods, CD players, Laptops, and any other consumer music device into your mixing console. Like all of Whirlwind's direct boxes, the podDI is built tough enough to take the rigors of the stage and has handy controls that are easy to use. A stereo 1/8" jack serves as the podDI's main input, though it has a stereo pair of RCA input jacks as well. What's even better is that the podDI's two sets of inputs run in parallel, so you can use one as an input and the other as a loop-though output to a personal monitor on stage - a real life saver! Also, there's a pair of attenuators for the left and right input channels, so you can adjust the mix right on the podDI. A single summed XLR output with a switchable ground lift gives you the clear, noise-free sound you need.

Whirlwind PodDI Box
The Whirlwind PodDI box works perfectly with the sound system at my church.
Whirlwind DI
Excellent di box! Does exactly as advertised. Stereo input to single xlr out. Great with stereo digital piano to mixer.
Great product and advice
Needed to combine a stereo signal for mono use. Worked totally well. Great Sweetwater advice as usual.
Affordable life saver
We use these for our church in several A/V situations where channels are limited, and all we need is to get sound from a laptop, or iPod, etc, to a PA. These are also helpful when using split tracks in rehearsals. This does what it says faithfully and even gives a little control to mix your stereo signal before summing with the Left and Right gain knobs.
Another cool little perk is the option to input via L/R RCA jacks or 1/8' mini pin. Very versatile little tool that saves channels and money.
a great di for my laptop
this thing is awesome its complete in every respect my laptop backing trax are kill thru the di... no more loopstations
It does the trick
Well, it does exactly what it says. Audio quality seemed excellent. There are cheaper solutions out there, but why mess around when you have the solution and you know it works? When was the last time you bought something that did exactly what you wanted it to do? It's been awhile for me...
Ditch the Y cable
This is the right tool for the job. Yeah, you could make your own, but this is the correct way to sum stereo signals for input into a mixer. I gave it four stars since it could either have more features or a lower price and fewer features. (I have not found the balance knobs useful. What I really want is a Y cable done right.)
Great Features, Little Pricey
I use this for various functions to connect iPods, DVD players, computers, etc for a non-profit agency that I work with for when I run sound. It's nice because I can use a 50ft XLR cable with it.
It's a little pricey, but Whirlwind makes great direct boxes and other products. I do like the RCA inputs, 1/8 inch stereo input, and the volume controls.
Works well when it works
I use several of these for multiple conference rooms at an event center and they just don't hold up. The connectors come loose relatively quickly and I've had trouble with internal connections going bad leading to lots of unwanted noise and lost signal. When they're functioning normally they're great - clean signal, good ground noise isolation. I just wish they were more durable.
