Unusual Amounts of Oxide Flakes – What To Do?

“My studio technician regularly cleans the heads in my ADAT machines. He keeps telling me that he is finding unusual amounts of oxide flakes in the machine. Is this bad? What do I do?” Yes, assuming the quantity he is finding is above normal, it is bad. It means your tape is shedding too much. As mentioned in today’s WFTD shedding can be caused by a variety of things, but it would probably be a good idea to have the mechanical alignment of your ADAT checked by a qualified repair technician. If the ADAT is fine, then the problem is your tape. Get some new, good tape, and store it in a cool dry place. Do not use your existing tape again. Once it begins to shed excessively, it is ruined forever. Don’t keep trying to use it because it will eventually start causing problems with your ADAT.
