Universal Audio Apollo Thunderbolt Windows Setup
Getting started
In this guide, we will show you how to set up a Universal Audio Apollo Thunderbolt interface on Windows PC’s. Follow the sections below to get started.
Update Windows OS settings
IMPORTANT: Before continuing, check that your Windows PC and Thunderbolt ports (adapters, too) are fully compatible with your Apollo interface. Check out Universal Audio’s Apollo Thunderbolt Windows Compatibility guide for information.
Some Windows settings must be updated before connecting an Apollo Thunderbolt interface to your PC. That typically means updating the operating system, Thunderbolt drivers, and BIOS.
Update Windows
Thunderbolt 3 requires the latest version of Windows to function correctly. While Windows 10 performs automatic updates, it’s always good practice to check and make sure you’re running on the latest version before connecting your Apollo Thunderbolt interface.
- Click the Windows Start icon, click Settings (cog icon), and then select Update & Security.
- Click Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Update Thunderbolt 3 driver and BIOS
After Windows has been successfully updated, you’ll need to install the latest Thunderbolt 3 driver for your motherboard and also update your BIOS. Since there are many different brands of motherboards, you’ll need to confirm the motherboard’s manufacturer and model before downloading. Here’s how to check what type of motherboard you have.
- Click the Windows Start icon, type system, and select System Information.
- When the System Information window opens, click System Summary. The motherboard manufacturer and model will be listed as BaseBoard Manufacturer and BaseBoard Product.
- Open a web browser, go to the manufacturer’s website and search for the latest Thunderbolt firmware, drivers, and BIOS update. Often times, Thunderbolt drivers and firmware will be listed under the Chipset category.
- Go to your Downloads folder, run the installers, and then restart your computer.
Enable Thunderbolt in BIOS
IMPORTANT: If you’re unsure on how to navigate through your PC’s BIOS, please refer to the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s owner’s manual or contact their support team. Changing the wrong settings can lead to system instability.
Depending on what system you have, you may need to enable Thunderbolt within your BIOS. This is especially true if you installed a Thunderbolt PCI-e card. To enter the BIOS, you typically need to keep pressing the F2, F11, or Del key as soon as you turn the computer on. However, each BIOS is different, so you will need to consult the computer or motherboard’s manual for instructions on how to enter the BIOS and how to enable Thunderbolt.
Configure Windows Thunderbolt device
You can connect the Apollo Thunderbolt interface once Thunderbolt has been enabled in your PC’s BIOS settings. After connecting it to your PC, you will need to “approve” the device to allow it to function correctly. Follow these steps to configure and approve the Apollo Thunderbolt on Windows.
- Connect the interface to the Thunderbolt port, and then turn the unit on.
- Once connected, you will receive a notification stating that the Thunderbolt application must run with Administrator privileges. Click OK to continue.
- When the Approve Thunderbolt Devices window appears, click the dropdown box next to the interface, select Always Connect, and click OK.

Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. Select manufacturers may require that only the manufacturer’s products qualify towards the minimum purchase amount needed to be eligible for promotional financing. Otherwise, an invoice that meets the minimum purchase amount and contains at least one qualifying manufacturer product is eligible for promotional financing. No interest will be charged on promo purchase balance, and equal monthly payments are required on promo purchase until it is paid in full. The payments equal the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next whole dollar. These payments may be higher than the payments that would be required if this purchase was a non-promo purchase. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to the prior months’ rounding. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. Min Interest Charge is $2. Existing cardholders: See your credit card agreement terms. Subject to credit approval.
Offer applies only to single-receipt qualifying purchases. No interest will be charged on the promo balance if you pay it off, in full, within the promo period. If you do not, interest will be charged on the promo balance from the purchase date. The required minimum monthly payments may or may not pay off the promo balance before the end of the promo period, depending on purchase amount, promo length and payment allocation. Regular account terms apply to non-promo purchases and, after promo period ends, to the promo balance. New Accounts as of 07/31/2025: Purchase APR is 34.99%. Penalty APR is 39.99%. The estimated required monthly payment shown which excludes taxes and delivery equals the amount financed divided by the number of months in the promo period, rounded up to the next cent. During the last month(s) of the promo period the required monthly payment may be reduced due to this rounding. These payments apply only with the financing offer shown. If you make these payments by the due date each month, you should pay off this amount financed within the promo period, if it is the only balance you are paying off. If you have other balances on your account, this payment will be added to any other minimum monthly payments.
