Parking Alesis ADATs For Transport

From one of our Alesis ADAT technicians:I have been curious about a phenomenon that happens once in a blue moon where a unit will have the pinch roller arm loose in the machine. This usually has caused a shorted PCB or worse, a damaged headstack! This can happen if the unit was not left in the “Ship ready” condition before shipping. This moves the pinch roller to a place where it will not come loose if subjected to a heavy jolt while in transit. To do this on an ADAT-XT hold input 1 and 7 down when powering up machine. The first thing in this self test mode is “0 SHIP.” DO NOT PRESS ANYTHING ELSE BUT – Press PLAY and it will move the transport until “ship rdy” appears. Unplug the machine and don’t power on again (Power on returns it to normal condition, which is why they make some weird sounds the first time you turn them on). Now it will ship safely! Please keep this in mind anytime you plan to ship your ADAT-XT machines.PS Unfortunately Original ADATs do not have a user setting for this and it only can be done by a technician.Editors Note: This information is NOT in the users manual for the ADAT. That means that Alesis would prefer that customers not do this. However, we feel that this operation is harmless and may prevent problems for those who must transport machines on the road. This is only an issue if you suspect your machine may take an extreme hit in transit. You do not need to do this to drive your machine across town to your friend’s studio.
