How much data can a CD hold
Many people wonder, “how much data does a CD hold?” Depending on what type of CD you’re using, blank CD-R’s and CD-RW’s can hold a few amounts of data. The most common amount of data which can be held on a CD-R/RW is 650MB (74 minutes of audio). These pass what’s called the Orange Book standard, which means CD-R drives can record (popularly known as burn) data that computer CD-ROM drives and audio CD players can read.
Less common amounts of data a CD can hold, which overlook the Orange Book standard, are 790MB (90 minutes of audio) and 870MB (99 minutes of audio). The actual amount of data a CD can hold can vary slightly however. Some 74-minute discs can hold up to two minutes more than their stated capacity, but it’s not likely to be evident on the packaging.
