After installing the Ethernet Protocal, DigiNet for Pro Tools Win 2K and upon running the “enable” scan in the Ethernet controllers (in the Pro Tools software) you get an error stating to check your connections and verify configuration. All Ethernet network and Internet connections are functioning correctly but Pro Tools is still unable to even scan for controllers and posts the error everytime the “enable” is engaged.

The work around1. delete the NIC entry in the Device Manager (actually highlight the entry and press DEL)2. Select Action|Scan for hardware changes in the Device Manager’s menu, which re-adds the NIC.3. Reboot so our Ethernet driver (DigiNet.sys) sees the newly reordered adapter list.4. Run Pro Tools, enable Ethernet controllers. It correctly scan’s for and finds the controller. Why this problem occurs. When Pro Tools goes to open an Ethernet connection, it queries the registry for a list of available adapters and uses the first one on the list. In cases when only a single adapter card is installed, this usually works fine. However, on some machine’s there can be “dummy” entries on the list before the “real” adapter card entry. It is not known where these dummy entries can come from or what they are used for. However, since Win2k otherwise seem’s to be operating fine, we need to assume dummy entries are possible.Removing the 3Com Ethernet card from the Device Manager and then re-add it. This cause’s the “real” adapter entry to be moved to the front of the list, allowing Pro Tools to find it and correctly scan for controllers. This serve’s as a workaround in the field. IIn the future Pro Tools will iterate through the adapter list entries until it finds one it can actually open, rather than just stopping at the first one. Long-term solution will be to put all adapter names in a popup list so the user can choose one. This will also allow for the case of more than one actual Ethernet card being installed.
