Renowned Fender Quality in a Full-featured Squier J Bass

Start your low-end journey on the right track with the Squier Affinity Series Jazz Bass V! Designed with accessibility, playability, and sonic versatility in mind, this J Bass has everything you need to deliver a room-rattling boom with clarity that cuts through mixes of all kinds. Its tonewood recipe combines poplar with maple for a full-bodied punch, made even better with a pair of highly versatile single-coil Jazz Bass pickups. And though it serves as the perfect first instrument for burgeoning bassists, gigging low-end warriors can tap this formidable 5-string as a rock-solid and reliable backup.

Boomy tonewood combo, effortlessly playable neck

Though priced for beginners and anyone looking for a wallet-friendly backup, Squier armed this bass with a full-bodied tone that sings in all applications. Sweetwater players will tell you that a bass guitar's woods make up the core of its tone — they are responsible for the thick, booming voice and long-lasting resonance. The Affinity Series Jazz Bass V supplies you with both. It's constructed with poplar for the body and maple for the neck, offering a well-balanced sound, a snappy response, and a sharp attack. Plus, the "C"-shaped neck feels supremely comfortable in hands of all sizes and shapes, capped with silky-smooth laurel for effortless playing across all strings and frets.

Jazz bass single-coils for ultimate versatility

When honing your sound, it's crucial to have the right tools and electronics. Luckily, the Affinity Series Jazz Bass V ticks both of these boxes with its warm, resonant woods and pair of ceramic single-coil Jazz Bass pickups. Capable of subtle to significant sound changes with the turn of a knob, Jazz Bass single-coils are a fantastic option when needing to cover a wealth of different genres and playing styles. Whether you're interested in funky bass licks or metallic low-end destruction, these impressive single-coils will deliver the goods.

Squier Affinity Series Jazz Bass V Features:

  • Full-featured 5-string J Bass perfect for beginners and gigging musicians seeking a solid backup
  • Poplar body combines with a maple neck for a thick, full tone and snappy response

Reviews

incredible value, especially if you swap pickups
Has a nice neck and body, so with a few easy mods you can upgrade it to compare with USA quality.

Pickups sounded a little blah-muddy but the neck felt really nice after being oiled up. So I put some flats on to see about a set up. Standard stock bridge was found to be serviceable as is, to keep costs down. I was easily able to adjust the truss rod and saddles to get the action and intonation correct. Suddenly it was playing like butter, and then only needed an electronics upgrade to be on par with a 'professional grade' instrument.

Two clicks later in walk some Fender Ultra Noiseless pick-ups, and a 920D loaded control plate. Drops-ins that instantly transformed a mid-level Squier into a formidable - great playing, and sounding instrument. Looks nice too btw, in burst with a black pickguard.

I have under 6 benjamins invested all in. And for me this did beat a mexican player plus V in a side by side. The active one. Look up the price of that. My Affinity V sounded every bit as good, played better, and was literally pounds lighter btw.

With these upgrades, I will now put this thing up against anything as a benchmark.

btw - I also upgraded a classic vibe 4 string this way. Also added a hipshot to that one since I happened to have an extra 4 str bridge laying around. - totally rocked it. Easy stuff you can do to a Squier to match your USA Fenders.

Have fun !
An outstanding five-string, regardless of price!
I bought this bass in March, 2025 as an experiment. It is now August, 2025 and this is the summary of my findings.

I wanted to add a 5 string bass to my playing abilities but had failed in an earlier attempt. String spacing seemed to be a key problem for me. So I decided to get a Jazz 5 which had the same string spacing as my Jazz 4.

Not wanting to risk a lot of money in this experiment, I opted for this Squier model, which got better when I had the chance to buy an open box bass with a further discount. It arrived in perfect shape...I saw nothing at all on it to indicate even the slightest of dings one might expect from an open box item and only needed me to rub some F1 oil into the pau ferro fretboard to be ready for set up.

I bought a set of TI Jazz Flats (JF 345) in the same order from Sweetwater. So, I installed these strings immediately and then did a full set up. The bass was close to a correct set-up out of the box and after a few tweaks, it was ready to go.

At that point, the experiment got serious. I started playing this bass one to three hours each day, preparing for my role in our worship band at my church. Four things emerged in the months I've been using it.

First, I discovered that the muscle memory already baked in from all my time playing a four string Fender Jazz bass transferred easily to this same string spacing on this Squier five string. In fact, as it has worked out, I split my bass time nearly evenly between the four and five string instruments. Zero problems for me flipping back and fourth...I was pleased with that.

Second, the overall feel of the neck, frets and strings is just terrific. The unit is solid and holds tune perfectly. Once set up, the action has stayed just where I wanted it. And I play it a lot.

Third, the sound of this bass with the TI Flats was better than I expected. I worked on the EQ in the setting at the church, boosting the low-mids and rolling off the treble and bass a bit and it seemed to sit well in the mix. Several of my bandmates and some knowledgeable listeners commented that the sound was clear and worked.

Fourth, I am surprised that I may not need to upgrade anything else to keep using this bass. I had expected to find, if I could play the five string, I'd then look to upgrade at least the pickups if not going to an entirely more expensive five-string bass. Yet, with the excellent strings, a careful set up and prudent use of EQ, I find I'm dialing in the exact warm sound that I wanted in this set up. I may well be just fine with this bass as I have it.

Hope this is helpful to folks looking at this bass as a possible purchase.

Affinity 5 string jazz bass.
This bass is good beyond the price point. No need to get Mexican jazz or made in USA. This jazz bass is going straight to stages. It will be played professionally. They say beginner or back up. I say straight to the stage. This is a steal of a price considering how everything so expensive. Sweetwater is the place to buy. They the best. Just get one. You will be glad you did.
Music background: Blues rock. Country. Dance. Funk. Play it all. In Led Zeppelin tribute band. Play 3 weekends a month.
Great for starters
This was my first bass ever. i've had it for over 9 months now and i've learned a lot since i first got it. Coming from a beginner, if your thinking about getting into playing bass and you want to learn the 'bassics' (get it haha), i highly recommend buying this bass.
Music background: tuba (4 years) and bass (1 year ish) player
Good Jazz Bass
Bass came already tuned, no issues at all, I only needed to change strings' height a bit. Liked double packaging, and overall experience with Sweetwater.
