What are subwoofers?

Subwoofers are large-format speaker systems designed to reinforce the low end of an audio mix, generally content in the range of 20Hz to 150Hz, such as the “woof” of a bass drum or sub synth. This register of the audio spectrum is difficult for full-range speakers to cover, which is why separate subs are often incorporated into live sound setups. In studio and home theater settings, they also form the “.1” component of a 2.1, 5.1, or 7.1 surround setup.

How do subwoofers work?

A subwoofer is comprised of a large-format speaker (most often from 12 inches to 18 inches) in a ported enclosure to maximize the amount of low-frequency air movement. Subwoofers typically operate with an internal crossover that “hands off” frequency content above, for instance, 80Hz or 150Hz to the full-range speakers while they reproduce the lower registers themselves. This helps eliminate crosstalk and phasing that could result from multiple speakers reproducing the same bass frequencies.
