About Studio Subwoofers
There's a misconception that all subwoofers perform more or less the same job in the studio. This might stem from the fact that we've all had plenty of experience with directional studio monitors and bookshelf speakers and can easily tell the differences between the good and bad.
Subwoofers, on the other hand, are harder to judge immediately — especially in a studio setting. Bass frequencies aren't directional, so you can't simply put your ear in front of the drivers to hear the difference between two subwoofers. The benefits usually present themselves as cleaner, better, tighter, higher-headroom mixes.
Are you seeking a sub to tune into those critical bass frequencies? Let Sweetwater be your guide as we explore the makeup of a great studio subwoofer.
Benefits of a High-quality Sub
A high-quality subwoofer can spell the difference between a tight, bumping sub-bass that feels like it's surrounding you from every direction and a diffuse, muddy low end. Turn your decent monitoring system into an incredible listening experience by upgrading your subwoofer.
A Word on Room Treatment
Be advised that getting the most out of your studio sub often requires a treated mix space. Introducing a subwoofer into an untreated room can further accentuate standing waves and room modes, making it even more difficult to properly balance and tighten the bass regions of the audio spectrum. See the article "Fix Your Room, Fix Your Mix" for more information on room treatment.
How Do I Find the Right Subwoofer for My Monitoring Setup?
Size and wattage
Subwoofers come in a wide variety of speaker sizes and wattages. We offer low-watt, compact options perfect for bedroom studios to giant behemoths with 1,000-watt, 18-inch drivers capable of causing plaster to rain down upon your poor neighbors' heads. Take care to size your subwoofer proportionally to match your primary speakers. It won't sound good if you have a couple of satellite speakers with little 3-inch bass drivers and then add a massive sub with an 18-inch speaker. Unless you plan to upgrade the rest of your system relatively soon, match the wattage of your new subwoofer to your current speakers. If you still have the manual for your power amp or crossover (or can look it up online), you’ll find everything you need to know.
Connection types
Pay close attention to input and output types. We have subwoofers to match most connector types, including XLR, 1/4 inch, RCA, and AES/EBU. If you're upgrading your subwoofer, ensure the new sub has the same connectors as your former. But if you're adding a sub to your system, it will depend on the connectors on your crossover or preamp, which may require climbing under the desk with a flashlight for close inspection. You'll be bummed if that sweet sub shows up and you have to turn around and buy an adapter, so save yourself the hassle.
