Ibanez has made numerous guitar overdrive pedals under the “Tube Screamer” name, but the classic “Tube Screamers” are usually considered to be the TS808 and TS9, the two earliest versions. The original TS808 was first released in 1979 and featured symmetrical clipping, unlike the competing BOSS OD-1, which featured asymmetrical clipping. The TS9, released in 1982, was practically identical internally but offered a larger footswitch and 9V AC operation. These are mid-gain overdrive pedals originally intended to mimic the sound of a vintage tube amplifier. They have a unique, mid-boosted tonal characteristic that has lent the Tube Screamer a place on many pedalboards as a boost pedal into other pedals or amplifiers. The Tube Screamer became a signature part of the tone of such guitarists as Stevie Ray Vaughan, among countless others.
