Synching the MOTIF to the AW4416

“I’ve run out of tracks on my AW4416 but still need to mix in keyboard tracks from my MOTIF – any ideas?”

While the following answer pertains to two specific pieces of equipment there are many elements of it, including the overall concept, that apply to other brands and models.

Yamaha’s MOTIF keyboard can be synchronized to their AW4416 using MTC (MIDI Time Code). This way, the Tracks in the MOTIF do not have to actually be recorded in the AW4416! Since the MOTIF is synced with the AW4416, the outputs of the MOTIF can be connected to input channels of the AW4416 and mixed together with the Tracks recorded in the AW4416. This is known as virtual tracking. If the optional AIEB2 output expander card is installed in the MOTIF, the Tracks in the MOTIF can be separated to individual outputs giving the user more mixing control in the AW4416. By doing this, the Tracks in the AW4416 can be used for vocals and other acoustic instruments. To do this the AW4416 will have to be the time code or sync Master and the Motif will need to be the Slave.

Connecting the AW4416 to the MOTIF:
1) Connect the MTC OUT of the AW4416 to the MIDI IN of the MOTIF using a standard MIDI cable.

Setting up the AW4416 (OS Version 2.0):
1) Press the [MIDI] key until the ‘MIDI Setup 1′ page is shown in the display.
2) Use the ARROW buttons to select ‘MASTER’ under ‘MTC SYNC’.
3) Press the [ENTER] button.

Setting up the AW4416 (Before OS Version 2.0):
1) Press the [MIDI] button then the [F2] button to access the MIDI Sync page.
2) Use the ARROW buttons to select ‘MASTER’ under ‘MTC SYNC’.
3) Press the [ENTER] button.
4) Use the ARROW buttons to select ‘MTC’ under ‘SYNC OUT’.
5) Press the [ENTER] button.

Setting up the MOTIF:
1) From the Song Mode, press the [UTILITY] button.
2) Press the [F5] button and then the [SF3] button.
3) Use the (DATA) Dial to set MIDI Sync to ‘MTC’.
4) Press the [SONG] button to exit the Utility Mode. When the [PLAY] button is pressed on the AW4416, the MOTIF will ‘chase‘ the incoming MTC from the AW4416 and the two units will be synchronized.
