The Sweetwater Minute, Vol. 290
Nick D’Virgilio joins drummer Antonio Sanchez in the Sweetwater Performance Theatre for a special interview. Born and raised in Mexico and drumming since the age of five, Antonio explains how his passion for drumming and music progressed from there.
It’s interesting to hear how Antonio approached music when he moved to the USA to study at Berklee College of Music. He talks about his interest in learning jazz, and his desire to take the fundamentals of jazz to other genres of music.
Antonio shares a great story about how he met jazz great Pat Metheny. Antonio had been experimenting with a trap kit accented with latin percussion pieces. Pat heard him from backstage and commented to someone that the drummer and the percussionist were playing very well together. When he learned that Antonio was playing both simultaneously, he soon invited Antonio to jam with him.
It was wonderful to have Antonio Sanchez visit us here at Sweetwater, and we hope you enjoy this interview as much as we enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!
