In music, the 6th degree of a major or minor scale. In the key of C major, for instance, it is A. In the key of C minor, it would be A-flat. It lies midway between tonic (the first note of the scale) and subdominant (the fourth note of the scale) in the same way as the mediant (the 3rd note in the scale) is midway between tonic and dominant (the fifth note in the scale).
