In music the tonic is the first note of the common diatonic scale, and is the pitch upon which such a scale is built. It’s the “Do” of the familiar “Do, Re, Mi…” It is defined in terms of a musical note rather than absolute frequency. If one changed the key from C to A-flat, it changes the tonic from a C note to an A-flat note.
