Roland XV-2020 Review

...I strongly recommend this module for TV/Film scoring musicians...

I recently test-drove the Roland XV-2020. Setting up was as easy as 1-2-3. USB from my laptop to the XV-2020 and a keyboard connected to the XV via MIDI for playing the sounds and controlling.

The XV-2020 comes with a powerful editor program that unleashes a monster synthesizer engine, enabling one to create new sounds and tweak existing sounds to their limits. The program serves not only as the synthesizer control panel but also as a master device control panel for the XV-2020, which can reach all of its internal system parameters, MIDI configuration and audio and effects routing/mixing parameters.

The sounds are high quality representations of their sources and very expressive. Finding the right’ sound was simple, quick and intuitive using the editor and the great feature; pressing the volume knob’ for a quick demo of each sound! Yes, that’s right, you can actually demo a sound without requiring a computer, sequencer or keyboard.

Within an hour, I sequenced a TV show theme and TV newscast theme and a trance music track and there was not a sound that I could not find for a specific part. I can’t remember how many times I’ve encountered the same issue of looking for a specific sound or set of sounds for a particular project and had not been able to find the right one with what I had. I cannot conceive this issue reoccurring with the XV-2020.

Although the XV-2020 can be utilized in any and every known MIDI application, I strongly recommend this module for TV/Film scoring musicians, schools with MIDI labs and seasoned pros that need to enrich their sound libraries. However, it will also make for a great first sound module for those who are new to MIDI and just starting out since it’s so easy to set up and works great right out of the box.

All in all, I give the XV-2020 a BIG thumbs up.
