Presonus’ DigiMAX LT preamp is very similar to their highly acclaimed DigiMAX, but at a lower price point. You give up the DigiMAX’s limiters, EQ circuitry, dedicated analog outputs, and AES output. But you get eight channels of pristine mic preamplification, with Presonus’ award winning Class A preamplifiers, inserts on every channel, 8 channels of ADAT lightpipe digital output, and an internal power supply.
Minnetonka has announced discWelder Steel, a basic DVD-Audio writing program that allows anyone to deliver high-resolution audio from a PC. With discWelder Steel, the user can import all Linear PCM formats supported in the DVD-A specification, including non-encoded and uncompressed surround (consisting of up to 6 channels of 24-bit, 48 kHz audio), and high-resolution stereo (two channels of 24-bit, 192 kHz audio). Surround and stereo tracks may be used on the same disc, and a discWelder-burned disc will play on any DVD-A player that supports DVD-R. The program can burn DVD-A discs utilizing inexpensive DVD-R drives (such as the Pioneer DVR-A04). Shipments are expected to begin in June.
Sweetwater Sales Engineer, Nika Aldrich, has posted a very comprehensive and (surprisingly) easy to understand paper on dither at his website. Dither is something every audio engineer working with mostly digital equipment should seek to understand, even if only at a rudimentary level. While not for beginners, Nika’s paper does an excellent job of introducing the key concepts without going completely overboard in scientific minutiae. Check it out.
