MIDI, Truly?

Q: I’ve seen a number of electric guitars that say that they have “built-in MIDI.” Is this really a 5-pin MIDI output that I can plug into my keyboard and play?”

A: We’re not aware of a standard electric guitar that has a true MIDI output. What these instruments usually have is a Roland-compatible 13-pin output, which carries the signals from the guitar’s or bass‘s individual strings. The 13-pin output connects to a converter, such as those from Roland or Axon, which changes the individual string signals into true MIDI data.
