If you are using a Macintosh computer with a relatively new OS you have probably noticed a handy feature known as Software Update. Software Update can automatically (or at your request) check for updates to your Mac operating system software and, if you’re connected to the Internet, download and install them for you. This is a great way to keep your OS and all of its parts current.
However, if you are using your Mac for digital audio and/or MIDI you should be very careful with this feature. Sometimes new ‘features’ in the Mac OS can cause problems with your MIDI or audio software. In general we recommend you not allow Software Update to download anything unless you understand what it is and know how to reverse the process if it causes a problem with your system. This is effectively an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality, but a wise one when dealing with a system you depend on.
If you do suspect a recent software update is causing trouble in your system you can open the Software Update Control Panel and select Display Log from the Update menu. This will show you what has been installed so you can go back and remove the latest items as part of your troubleshooting.
